He opted in to the last year of this contract. That opens him up to still signing the huge extension and Houston having his Bird rights to resign him next year. He loses about 8 million for the coming year by agreeing to this deal but it'll pay off long term.

They don't have the cap room for him to sign outright, they'd have to gut the roster to fit him either way

They are still trying to add another superstar (Paul George perhaps) with Harden and CP3.

My initial take is it doesnt make a lot of sense

After game 6. It makes a lot of sense to really rockets fans.


It feels like if you weren't a rocket fan, you don't know how gut wrenching and disgusting game 6 was. As a basketball fan you can understand how mystifying it was but the agony it was to watch as a rockets fan told us that there needed to be a change. Could be an overreaction but it wasn't necessary one..
