Yeah, now. It's not like our ancestors got stuffed into a boat knowing who Jesus was. Christianity and Islam has older ties to East Africa, Africans, but not necessarily our ancestors.

That is not true. Kongo and Angola accepted Catholicism in around 1487, which was even before Columbus discovered the Americas. Widespread enslavement didn't occur until the 1600's and 1700's. Kongo and Angola produced roughly half of all the slaves.

About 30% to 40% of all the slaves were Muslim. Jesus is considered a Prophet in Islam.

So yes our ancestors did get stuffed in to boats knowing who Jesus was.

What you might be talking about is how Black people now worship. Now that was part of the what is called the "Second Great Awakening."

Firstly missionaries were traveling since the Stone age so I'm not surprised there were small remnants of of the three main religious sects on the continent

But where on Earth are you getting this notion that 30%-40% of slaves were Muslim :childplease:

My brief Google search shows a meager estimate of as low as 7 to as high as 30 which is a huge range.

Sylviane Diouf does a very good job of covering it in her research. She puts it at 33% or higher. Her book was really well researched. She also shows how Islam survived in African American Churches.

Edit: Btw, I think that your 7% is way out of date. Most scholars on the subject now concede that at minimum Muslim accounted for at least 25%-33% of all slaves and that number seems to be getting adjusted each year as more research is being done. So the range has been moving upwards. You might want to change your sights.

"They've been here since the birth of the nation ...
Scholars estimate about a quarter to a third of the Africans brought to the United States as slaves were Muslims. Most were then forced to convert to Christianity... ."

It is not about that for me. It is about showing our ancestors in the proper light. That is all that I attempt to do. There were some Africans that were animist and some were Muslims and Christians.

What surprised me in my reading was how much of Islam that African Americans incorporated into Black Christian Churches. Some of it is really incredible actually.

Christianity and Islam are the two biggest religions in West Africa. It's behind alot of the conflict in Nigeria right now.

Not only that but VooDoo was pretty much only practiced in Togo and Benin.
Benin and Togo: The Birthplace of Voodoo

It got to Haiti after slaves were imported from Togo and Benin. It got to the USA in large part as a result of the slave revolt in Haiti. French slave owners in Haiti brought their slaves to Louisiana. So voodoo was not as widespread as people think.
