MANHATTAN — An elderly woman was killed after she jumped in front of a train at the Dyckman Street
1 train station Monday morning, according to officials and witnesses.
The person, who witnesses identified as a woman, was hit by a southbound 1 train entering the station at Dyckman Street and Nagle Avenue at around 11:45 a.m., an MTA spokeswoman said.
Rosa Minervini, who was waiting for a train, said she saw a woman jump onto the tracks just before the train entered the station.
"It happened so quickly, said Minervini. "The train just came and she jumped."
Rafael Peralta, 44, tried unsuccessfully to warn the train operator after he saw the woman lie down on the tracks.
"We signaled for the train to stop, but it was too late," said Peralta. "There was no more time."
The woman did not survive the impact and was pronounced dead at the scene, an FDNY spokesman said.
Officials have not released the woman's identity but said she was around 80 years old and that she left a suicide note with her brother.
Subway service, which was suspended in both directions after the incident, had resumed with delays by 1:15 p.m., according to the MTA's website.
