College-bound students who have grown up experiencing the first Black U.S. president, the first Black and South Asian vice president, the Black Lives Matter movement and a drive for a renewal of civil rights reinvigorated by the murder of George Floyd, want a sense of belonging at their university.

As a result, Black high school graduates are again starting to flock to HBCUs, Slaughter said.

Today, he said, “Black families are beginning to believe that their children are not going to get a quality education at schools that are now adding diversity, equity and inclusion. And that is a principal reason that they are beginning to look at the Black institutions instead.”

The June 2023 Supreme Court ruling ending affirmative action at colleges has also been a factor in prodding Black students to HBCUs, Slaughter said.

Enrollment numbers from HBCUs with accredited engineering programs support his claims.

Morgan, Spencer’s school, is experiencing its third consecutive year of record enrollment, including the largest graduate school enrollment in its history. Norfolk State University in 2022 saw a 64% increase in freshman applications over the previous year. The University of Maryland, Eastern Shore, has its highest enrollment in nearly a decade.

:ahh: you love to see it.
