Unfortunately, live debates don't necessarily do much for democracy, as our own electoral process shows.

True ..but this is ground breaking when you consider this is the same country where only 15 or so years ago daniel arap moi was being declared president for life all the media was state controlled its like going from N korea status to Eastern europe overnight

I'm honestly not sure that live debates are THAT great for democracy, it shows more who can answer quickest, has the best lines and "wit", but that's not necessarily teh guy or woman you want in office. It gives an advantage to the extrovert/"go-getter"/funny/charismatic type, t, that's why Berlusconi introduced them in Italy. It's turned politics into primetime entertainment.

It's good to have them tho, but I don't like giving them too much weight.

they use to have debates on the radio which i think is alot more effective since you're forced to listen to their arguments but no one listens to radio nemore
