MELBOURNE, Fla. — A Melbourne police officer was arrested and charged for punching a handcuffed suspect he was taking to the hospital, Florida law enforcement authorities said.

Christopher William Eisen II, 47, is facing charges of felony battery in connection with an incident on April 5 when the police officer punched the suspect several times in the face with “a closed fist,” the Florida Department of Law Enforcement said Friday.

The officer and suspect, who authorities did not name, are both white.

“We absolutely will not tolerate these types of activities and will be thorough and relentless when allegations such as these arise,” said Melbourne Police Chief Steve Mimbs in a statement.

“In this case, the process used by our supervisors to review each use of force scenario uncovered this incident and we took immediate action to have it investigated.”

Mimbs, who requested that the department investigate the incident, added: “Our officers are devoted to maintaining the utmost professionalism even in the face of provocation” and will “continue to be committed to having a transparent relationship with the community we serve.”

Eisen was booked into the Brevard County Jail on Friday night on a $15,000 bond.
