in that world, barristan selmy is considered by many the greatest swordsman alive/ever. he served the targaryens in the kingsguard for decades, and when robert baratheon came thru and crushed the buildings, he almost fought to the death. but robert respected him so much he had barristan healed up and asked him to serve under him. Remember even ned had crazy respect for him, he gave barristan the kings will cause he knew no one would question his honor

IDK if you remember jamie talking about it last season while being locked up with his cousin, but he squired for barristan for a while and he said "its like watching a painter who only uses red...i could never imagine being able to fight like that". Joffrey and Cersei are idiots for kicking him out the kingsguard

yea remember since the first season, every village the nights watch went to beyond the wall were empty. The wildings use to be scattered but they all joined up and went to the far north and they mean to march south to GTFO, remember the wilding bytch thats with bran and rickon, she was shook as fukk and told master leuwin that robb and his army need to march north not south cause of the white walkers. but at this point everyone south of the wall think the white walkers are some fairy tale creatures, no one believes that shyt.

Maybe it all happened before Robert really started hoing. It could have been a pretty delicate situation right after they killed the mad king. If Robert knocked up someone that's not cersei it could have fukked up the whole alliance. Which was pretty fragile to begin with.

I'm not 100 percent committed to the Robert part of the theory, but I definitely get the impression Ned didn't tell everyone the whole story.

I'm on book five right now and there's no evidence of this Targaryen thing so far. There's different theories floating around, one thing is sure is that Ned was very secretive about it. And to whoever said it was Robert' b*stard, while it may not be so evident on the show, book Jon Snow actually looks like Ned Stark the most of all his 7 kids.
