FLOWERY BRANCH —

Pro Bowl wide receiver Roddy White, 32, who’s closing in on most of the team’s receiving records, agreed to a four-year contract extension with the team on Thursday.

White was set to enter the final year of his contract. He wants to play at least three more years. The situation was put on hold after the shooting death of his brother Tyrone Moore Jr. over the offseason.

White was elated that the deal was completed before he was scheduled to report for camp.

“There is no doubt about it,” said Jonathan Feinsod, White’s long-time agent.

White is also pleased that he’ll be able to end his career with the Falcons, who drafted him in the first-round of the 2005 draft out of Alabama-Birmingham.

“It’s a unique situation in today’s football world,” Feinsod said.

Both sides had been rather quiet as negotiations were placed on the back burner. White held out of the 2009 training camp, while his six-year, $48 million deal was being hammered out.

Before the extension, White was set to make a $5 million base salary for the upcoming season. Before the deal, 10 receivers around the league had higher average per year salaries.

  1. Calvin Johnson, Detroit Lions, $16.2 million
  2. Larry Fitzgerald, Arizona Cardinals, $16.1 million
  3. Percy Harvin, Seattle Seahawks, $12.8 million
  4. Mike Wallace, Miami Dolphins, $12 million
  5. Derrick Bowe, Kansas City Chiefs, $11.2 million
  6. Vincent Jackson, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, $11.1 million
  7. Brandon Marshall, Chicago Bears, $10 million
  8. Andre Johnson, Houston Texans, $9.6 million
  9. Greg Jennings, Minnesota Vikings, $9 million
  10. Victor Cruz, New York Giants, $8.60
  11. Roddy White, Atlanta Falcons, $8.5 million

Under general manager Thomas Dimitroff, the team has done a good job of taking care of productive players. But Jones’ mega-contract is also on the horizon.

“We’re always going to be an organization that rewards players for being productive on the field and good citizens off of it,” said Dimitroff after White’s holdout in 2009.

White, 6-foot, 211 pounds, struggled early in his career. He started to blossom in 2007.

The four-time Pro Bowler owns club records for career receptions (685), career receiving yards (9,436), career 100-yard receiving games (37), and career games with 10-or-more receptions (11). White also holds franchise records for single-season receiving yards (1,389), single-season receptions (115), single-game receiving yards (210), and single-season 100-yard games (6).

Last season, White struggled as he battled through injuries. After trying to play on a high ankle sprain and then a hamstring injury, White rebounded to catch 43 passes for 502 yards and two touchdowns.

White’s 685 receptions rank eighth among active players while his 9,436 receiving yards rank fifth. His 55 touchdown catches during that time also rank 10th in the NFL.

Between 2010 and 2012, White posted one of the most impressive runs by any receiver in NFL history. He finished the 2012 season with 92 catches and 1,351 yards, becoming just the fifth player in NFL history to record three consecutive seasons with 90-plus receptions and 1,200-plus yards.

White joined :whoa: (1999-02), Torry **** (2002-05), Jerry Rice (1993-96), and Chad Johnson (2003-05) as the only players to accomplish that feat

Corey Peters attempts to bounce back said:
By D. Orlando Ledbetter

FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons defensive tackle Corey Peters has style.

He drove into training camp with a new ride, a Kia Soul!

The youngsters love the hip care, but after signing a new $1.5 million contract this offseason he could have went the sports car route.

“It has plenty of room,” said Peters, who’s 6-foot-3, 305 pounds. “It rides good.”

Falcons defensive tackle Corey Peters after checking in for training camp on July 24, 2014 (D. Orlando Ledbetter/DLedbetter@ajc.com)

Peters, who’s coming back from a ruptured Achilles surgery, was plenty early for the 5 p.m. team meeting. He was placed on the active/physically unable to perform list.

He was injured in the 15th game of the season against San Francisco.

“It’s just snapped,” said Peters, who had a career-high five sacks before the injury. “After it was over, it’s not bad.”

Falcons coach Mike Smith said Peters’ recovery has been strong. Peters is hoping to be ready for the start of the season.

“That’s the plan,” Peters said. “I’m optimistic about it. But it’s just going to all depend on how these next few weeks play out.”

If he’s not ready, the Falcons could place him on the reserve/physically unable to perform list and he could miss the first six games.

But Peters believes the surgery went well.

“I feel good,” Peters said. “I’m very excited about everything moving forward. It’s been a long process. This will be the seventh month. That’s right at the end of the timeline of what we talked about after surgery.”

He will start training camp conditioning on the side with the trainers.

“I’m excited about it,” Peters said. “Now, it’s just a process of working my way back into football shape. I’m getting ready to get back out there.”

Over the past two seasons, the Falcons have had four players suffer ruptured Achilles tendons. Cornerback Brent Grimes, defensive end/linebacker Kroy Biermann, Peters and linebacker Sean Weatherspoon have all suffered the same injury.

Grimes made it back last season and went to the Pro Bowl for Miami. Biermann is trying to come back this season and Weatherspoon suffered his injury in June.

“I think that more than anything, the previous guys have been like a shoulder to lean on,” Peters said. “They’ve been able to be very supportive toward me. Everybody has a better understanding of it because they’ve dealt with it.

“For me, it’s a very important tendon. We are trying to get it very strong. It’s probably stronger than my other one at this point. It’s definitely something that I wouldn’t recommend anybody to go through.”

Not enough has been said about the RBs

Here’s our projected depth chart for the running backs.

RB 39 Steven Jackson, 32 Jacquizz Rodgers, 35 Antone Smith, 33 Devonta Freeman, 30 Josh Vaughan, 34 Jerome Smith

FB 42 Patrick DiMarco, 45 Maurice Hagens, 43 Roosevelt Nix

Falcons running back Steven Jackson hopes to rebound from a sub-par 2013 season. He averaged a career-low 3.5 yards per carry in 2014.

Falcons running back Steven Jackson’s streak of eight consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons came to an end in 2014.

For the third consecutive season, he was slowed by a soft-tissue injury. Jackson suffered a hamstring injury in the second game of the season against his former team, the St. Louis Rams. He missed four games.

Jackson, who turned 31 on Tuesday, rushed 157 times for 543 yards and scored six touchdowns. He averaged a career-low 3.5 yards per carry.

However, the Falcons are counting on Jackson to bounce back and carry the rushing attack.

Much has been made of rookie Devonta Freeman, but he’ll start off as Jason Snelling’s replacement.

The dependable Jacquizz Rodgers is also back.

Falcons running back Warrick Dunn believes that Freeman is a good fit. Dunn was a speed back, who ran with authority at 5-foot-8 and 180 pounds. Freeman also is 5-8, but is 26 pounds heavier.

“He’s a little stocky power back, who can pick up some tough yards for you as well,” Dunn said. “He’ll have to come in and soak everything up and learn the system. Then, he’ll have to try to find his spot where he can go in and make plays.”

Freeman rushed 173 times for 1,016 yards last season and became FSU’s first 1,000-yard rusher since Dunn accomplished that feat in 1996.

“As far as the running back position, I know they are bringing in people who can help us be the best that we can be,” Dunn said. “We have a nice group of running backs, but it’s like anything, we have to take the next step in preventing injuries. We have to just utilize the guy’s talents in the way that helps them excel.”

Falcons coach Mike Smith is also more comfortable with backup running back Antone Smith, who flashed in spot duty last season.

DiMarco was the No. 1 full back last season and was used exclusively as a blocker. He played 196 snaps and did not have a carry.
