Long story short: the petroleum companies and industrialists that controlled energy in that region basically threatened him and his family with death if he didn't shut his research down. This way 15-20 years ago, way before electric power was gradually allowed to get more advanced and developed.
I wish I still knew this dude but it's not uncommon at all. The elites/powerholders do just about anything to hang on to their power. Diseases are no different. I have no doubt if they wanted to they could cure most of the world's deadliest diseases, but like some have said in this thread, you included, there is more money in treatment than curing.
