Chess is funny. I've played brilliant players. Even played against Emory tate when a friend was helping him prepare for the DC open. And you find that it's hard to make a living doing it unless you're the best of the best. And you find that people spend years of their lives doing it and wasting their brilliance on it and it gives nothing back..

Its worth it playing when you're young like these kids and don't have to worry about making a living. I started late but I picked up its nuances quickly and ascended past people who had been doing it years. Then quit for years and now I'm back playing again. I probably should set goals on what level I want to be at. My future kids probably will play chess at a very young age.

Pops taught me the game at a young age, I never became great but the game changes the way your able to think and I’m so thankful for it.

Pops taught me the game at a young age, I never became great but the game changes the way your able to think and I’m so thankful for it.

It has a temperament aspect to it. Like cause it's a mental VS mental game you find sometimes the pressure you put on someone else can kill their morale or bring out other cracks. To start to show. The laziness in some of their thinking seeps through, emotional decisions.. Etc.. so you have to if you are competing be mentally strong in your thinking. Be willing to compete and to picture ideas.

I believe the people who are smart in chess would have been smart anyway with or without chess. But it legitimized them.

I've played in parks with bums and ivy league grads and it could go either way in their matchups.. But I feel the grads used their intelligence in a more directed way outside of that and didn't focus just on playing chess and being good at it cause that takes more than it gives. At a certain point it's not expanding your mind anymore.

All that being said.. I would like to teach my kids when they are young so that they're comfortable with being intelligent early. Being mentally strong and accomplish things with that intelligence before I move them onto other things which have more utility in their lives.
