Best Hair Care Tips for Black Men

You want to take care of your hair. But you also want to avoid the long trip down the men's grooming aisle or endless clicking on Google in search of the right hair care and styling products for dry, curly hair.

So we're here to help!

In this blog post, we'll share four of our favorite hair care tips (with examples) to make your decision and morning routine a lot easier.

Tip #1

Shampoo less frequently! Maybe you've heard it before but still shampoo everyday to get the gunk and grease out of your hair from that styling product (more on that later). Or maybe you've never heard the recommendation and are wondering why. Well, here's the simple answer: it's all about one nasty chemical.

Most shampoos that you can grab off the shelf contain SLS or sodium lauryl sulfate. It's a detergent that cleans the hair but unfortunately it tends to strip away the natural oils that your scalp produces to protect your hair.

That means overexposure to SLS (i.e. shampooing day in and day out) will leave your hair dry and brittle-- and no one wants that Brillo-pad feel.

Solution: Cut down to shampooing only twice a week, preferably with a product that doesn't contain SLS. Our invigorating shampoo is sulfate-free and blended with natural oils and other ingredients to keep moisture in while it cleans.

Tip #2

Moisturize everyday! You hair has a tendency to dry out across the day. Whether from dry air in the fall, indoor heating in the winter, or even hats in the summer or spring, every day is a battle to keep those locks smooth. But you have to get to the root!

Hydrating at the scalp helps keeps the hair that grows from it soft and (most importantly) easy to style.

Solution: Even when you don't shampoo (but especially after you do) use a rinse-out conditioner to replenish moisture to your scalp and hair.

You can also use a hydrating creme like our award-winning Daily Hydrator or any number of oils or oil blends (including sweet almond oil or coconut oil) and apply it directly to the scalp.

Be sure to distribute evenly throughout the scalp and hair for best results.

A little everyday can go a long way!

Tip #3

Choose a low-maintenance style!Sometimes it can feel like your only options are a low caesar or the baldy. But taking care of your hair the right way means that you'll have a lot more range to wear waves, short curls or even longer styles based on your hair type.

Solution: Find something that works for you or ask a trusted groomer for their expert opinion. You can always go back to the low cut but you'll never know if you'll find a better look--something that really makes an impression-- unless you do a bit of (controlled) experimentation.

Just make sure it doesn't make you late to work!

Tip #4

Choose the right styling product!Remember we said we'd get back to this? Well here's the hard truth: most of what we have access to at the local drug store is either (1) not formulated for our hair type or (2) full of grease to force things to lay flat. In each case, you're not doing your hair any favors.

Solution: Make sure you're in the ethnic section, which should usually be more curly-hair friendly, and do your best to avoid options that contain alcohol, mineral oil or petrolatum--good to hold things in place but dries out the hair and gives off that crazy shine.

Opt for a natural solution like our Sleek Water™ pomade, infused with grapefruit seed oil to moisturize hair and give medium hold-- without the greasy residue. Consult your barber for their recommendations as well since more and more shops are carrying trusted products.
