Lots of factors in play. Maxima has CVT so it's always gonna be on the right part of the torque curve for acceleration.
Maybe your tires are old. Maybe your car was cold. Maybe you were in the wrong gear. You're right tho a 20 hp difference shouldn't lead to you getting smoked.

Nissan V6s. 
20hp isn't that big of a difference, considering other variables. Minuscule, actually. I'm a Honda guy, but I've walked more than enough V6/V8 cars like puppies to know that HP isn't everything.

I think Nissan underrates the Maxima engine a little bit as well. Those shyts fly foreal.
