Before the superhero wave kicked off I honestly thought Marvel movies would be the ones to have the dark and serious tone and DC would have the more lighthearted movies.

Marvel has always had more character driven stories than DC. Except for Batman stories, he and his rogues gallery were always well developed and thought out. People relate to Marvel because they are better at showing the ups and downs of being heroes/villains. Hulk struggling with anger management, Spider-man trying to balance school and hero duty, Fantastic 4 always bout to be evicted because Reed doing some crazy experiments that mess up the apartment, X-men facing discrimination from everyone etc.

I felt that had to do with the fact that Marvel took place in the "real world" (meaning NY) and DC was fictitious (outside of Kansas for supes)
