Every artist got jerked.
Every artist who decided to become executives jerked other artists.
Artists are still getting jerked today.
It’s time to stop talking about it and do something about it.
Jerked off is hard to define.
But obviously, there should be like some type of certified/qualified lawyer representing the artist at every contract negotiation. And young people should have some type of standardized contracts, specially as regards length of contract.
But also, a lot of people have a business where they sign many artists and most of them you lose money on. But then you find 1-2 that make up for those losing artists.
Or in other cases where you have a producer/exec who has the concepts, beats, the whole marketing plan etc. And just asks different people to come audition, few people will say no to 200k. Even if that shyt later turns out to yield 10m. Cause in such a case it’s 0 or 200k.
In such a business without guaranteed income, no structure like a league or tv contracts etc. It’s a really difficult problem. I think limiting length of young people to like 5 years would be the easiest and most fair change to make. But someone powerful gotta lobby lawmakers, and such power is the labels themselves. But I also think the Academy could do something, they are however severely corrupted by the labels since all their people are connected to them.
