I'm liking the winner-loser aspect with basic trivial. It make the players think quickly on the fly in which should help them on the field in the fall

Sucks for the kid but it may be the best for both parties in the long run. He may find a smaller school who will take a chance on him while OSU can use the scholarship for someone else who can help them win games in the future.
