Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Computer Entertainment's worldwide studios, has discussed Microsoft's invitation to connect Xbox Live and PlayStation Network for cross-platform multiplayer. According to Yoshida, the technical work required to do so "could be the easiest" part.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Yoshida noted that Sony has supported cross-platform functionality between PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3,PlayStation 4, and PC for numerous games, most notably Rocket League and Street Fighter 5.
On the subject of the PS4 and Xbox One multiplayer networks interfacing with each other, Yoshida said there were technical challenges that needed to be overcome, but suggested this may not be difficult.
"Because PC is an open platform it's much more straightforward [compared to Xbox One]. Connecting two different closed networks is much more complicated, so we have to work with developers and publishers to understand what it is they are trying to accomplish.
"We also have to look at the technical aspect," he continued. "The technical aspect could be the easiest."
Why would that stop it?Connecting Xbox One and PS4 Networks "Could Be Easy," Says PlayStation Exec
Like we've all suspected... if the devs have exclusive content deals in place for maps/items/weapons etc, then that's where the issues come in with this.
Because it's more work for devs to sort all of those variables out.Why would that stop it?
Even on the same platform some people have the DLC and some people dont
The more people you have to throw in there, the less likely that psychological anomaly will kick in. Then you have the actual reality of it, which is, more players, for everyone, means more games, and more games means more participation and community feedback, which we can then put into the game as a whole and not have to worry about siloing off certain features of certain platforms because this version doesn’t have it, or whatever the situation may be.
