Legendary Entertainment is setting its sights on a bigger prize: the eventual clash of King Kong and Godzilla. To that end, the studio has announced the assemblage of a writers room that will author the story beats of Kong vs. Godzilla, under the direction of Pirates of the Caribbean screenwriter Terry Rossio.

Rossio is a veteran screenplay writer best known for his work on The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. He's also worked on the scripts for films like Shrek, Aladdin, Small Soldiers, and he's even got a story credit on that terrible Matthew Broderick Godzilla movie. The rest of Rossio's writing cohorts includes:

Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne, who co-wrote Star Trek Beyond and who are working on Star Trek 4;

Lindsey Beer, who is currently adapting The Kingkiller Chronicles for Lionsgate;

Cat Vasko, currently penning Warner Bros.'s adaptation of period circus love story, Queen of the Air;

T.S. Nowlin, the writer of the Maze Runner movies who already worked for Legendary on its Pacific Rim sequel;

Jack Paglen, a writer and actor, known for Transcendence (2014), Alien: Covenant (2017) and Roadside Picnic (2017).

And J. Michael Straczynski, the comic book writer and creator of 1990s sci-fi show Babylon 5 whose recent credits include World War Z and co-creating Netflix show Sense8 with the Wachowskis.

The eight writers will be figuring out the best way to approach the film as well as breaking down the beats of the story. Once the heavy lifting has been none, a writer will then be chosen to tackle the script.

Godzilla, released in 2014, was the first entry, and Skull Island, during its development, was retrofitted to fold into an overall story. Legendary is now in the casting stages of a sequel to Godzilla, titled Godzilla: King of the Monsters, with Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga and Millie Bobby Brown so far on the roll call. That movie has a March 22, 2019, release date. Godzilla vs. Kong is eyeing May 29, 2020.

Moviegoers and kaiju-enthusiasts alike have already become acquainted with Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s cinematic Monsterverse in the 2014 film Godzillaand 2017’s Kong: Skull Island and will continue to do so with 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters. But fans of the two titular monsters will have to wait until 2020 when they go head-to-head in Godzilla vs. Kong.

Although they are two different monsters, they both reign as gods of their own domains, something that was alluded to in the story of Kong: Skull Island and it’s after-credits scene. Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts revealed in an interview with Collider that he’s confident that his interpretation of the Eighth Wonder of the World will be given the same proper handling in the hands of Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard:

“Talking to Adam made me so happy because he, in particular, really understands the kind of anime, manga, mech sensibility that I was trying to bring to Kong. He gets that and that was something that I fought so hard for and was so difficult to sort of realize to life through concept to execution with ILM [Industrial Light and Magic.] That’s one of the things I’m most proud of with him. I think he truly gets that and he truly wants to lean into this version of Kong that kind of was born from my crazy and stupid video game brain.”

Vogt-Roberts also mentions that although there will the traits and sensibilities he established in Kong: Skull Island will be carried to Wingard’s film, he still advises that Wingard will still retain plenty of creative freedom with Kong:

“Yeah. He’s got plenty of freedom to sort of play around with how he wants and to play around with … I always joke that my Kong was kind of like a character in a Shane Black movie in the sense that he just gets beat the fukk up by the end of the movie. He’s just battered and scarred, and so he’s got that kind of reluctant protagonist vibe to him. I think Adam’s willing to take that anime thing and do what he needs to do as he squares off with Godzilla.”

Kong: Skull Island is now available on home video formats, featuring a cast that includes Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, Toby Kebbell, John C. Reilly, and Terry Notary.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters begins its reign on March 22, 2019. The film’s cast includes Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Aisha Hinds, Anthony Ramos, Charles Dance, Elizabeth Ludlow, Zhang Ziyi, Anthony Ramos, Ken Watanabe, Randy Havens, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Aisha Hinds, Thomas Middleditch, Bradley Whitford, and Sally Hawkins.

Godzilla VS. Kong is set for release on May 29, 2020.

Per usual, Gormaru Island is on top of the harder-to-find tidbits regarding the Godzilla fandom. This time they have unearthed an article by Atlanta, Georgia's Business Chronicle. The Chronicle had an interview with film office chief Lee Thomas who spoke about the industry's growth in Atlanta. One of the films referenced as part of the industry's 2018 development was Godzilla vs. Kong.

"Thomas said she thinks the industry will continue building momentum throughout 2018, with more shows coming town, reportedly including "Godzilla vs. King Kong."

his is the only mention of the big 2020, giant monster crossover.The article continues to pull examples of how Atlanta's film business is growing--Including a Kodak Photographic Arts Center which would make the city set-friendly for celluloid.

It's important to note that this is not official confirmation that Godzilla vs. Kong's production will start this year. However, the Atlanta Business Chronicle has been on point about Godzilla before. This could be the first sign of a quickly approaching production start. More as it comes.

Thanks to Gormaru Island for the digging.

Godzilla vs. Kong is directed by Adam Wingard based on a writers room story led by Terry Rossio. Alex Garcia is producing.

The film will hit theaters May 22nd, 2020.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters hits theaters March 22nd, 2019. Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters will arrive on Netflix January 17th, 2018 and its sequel Godzilla: Decisive Battle, Mobile Breeder City will hit Japanese theaters May, 2018.

Godzilla vs. Kong (2020) is the sequel to Michael Dougherty's Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters and will be the fourth and final installment in the Monsterverse movie quadrilogy. It will also bridge both the Godzilla movies and Kong: Skull Island by bringing Godzilla and Kong face-to-face for an epic match-up.
