I have a few friends who are pretty successful PT's...they pretty much say that most of their clients just want someone to talk to while they do some half-assed workout. Don't gotta be the biggest looking dude, but it helps your credibility if you're in shape.

This sounds about right. I don't think I've ever seen anyone with a personal trainer improve their physique over time. If you have a crisp mouthpiece you will eat.

I've seen trainers in various levels of physical fitness. Some were not really fit, but they were way more fit than the customers they were helping.
Just get whatever certification the gym or health club wants.
