We last learned about Shorter College, the small junior college in North Little Rock that earned an average score of 5.

See the updated leaderboard here

Today we head to South Carolina, home of of eight HBCUs and two in the city of Orangeburg alone. Claflin University, established by Methodist missionaries, was one of the first institutes of learning for freed slaves after the Civil War. Claflin is the surname of the family of the most prominent of the founding philanthropists which included William Claflin, the then governor of Massachusetts. Claflin has typically been less known than nearby South Carolina State University (which Claflin briefly absorbed from the 1870s to 1890s).

However, Claflin has one of the higher graduation rates for HBCUs and the most dedicated alumni base of all HBCUs if you use alumni giving rates as a proxy. Claflin has 48% of its alumni donate to the school, higher than any other HBCU including Morehouse, Howard, and Spelman. Much of the progress has been attributed to Dr. Henry Tisdale, the president up until 2018. He ended open admissions (only 62% accepted now), made the school more selective, and stepped up recruiting. His wife also set up an honors college with high standards (and in a blast from the past, requiring dressed up attire four days a week). This made Claflin one of the Top 10 ranked HBCUs in recent years and earning a solid reputation.

Rules:

1. Thecoli will be rating most of the 101 Historically Black Colleges and Universities during the first half of 2023.

2. You can rate the HBCU on several factors including academics, the administration, school experience, athletics, post-grad success, and the "talent"

3. You do not have to be an alum/alumna or have attended the HBCU to vote

3. You can rate each HBCU anywhere on a scale of 1-10.

4. The results of the poll will be displayed publicly.

6. This is not a scientific poll, don't take a high or low rating of a HBCU as the full measure of the "worth" of the school, whether someone should attend, etc.

7. The polls will be open for 96 hours

8. Rep and dap as many people as you like and don’t forget to 5 star this thread.

What does piss me off is SC State literally sits next door and has much more administrational fukkery gong in there.

But SC state is public so you know when it comes to state funding it's :mjpls: season by state lawmakers. That's why it's so important for alums to give back. Hold the trustees and president accountable if they are fukkin off the money

Above the fray.
Great info about the school. Recurring themes in the entries about the high functioning schools seem to include dynamic leadership, and alumni engagement.
If non alumni makes big donations, cool, but the lifeblood of any school is engagement from their alumni.

I think a lot of times, people's complaints about which schools get high profile donations would work better if they directed that same energy towards building excitement from their alum towards their schools.

The thing about alumni engagement, as a whole alums don’t donate high, but alum’s relationship with the admin does effect, going back helping be an ambassador for your institution, and spreading its good nature. An alum base that’s not dissatisfied is a powerful thing
