Norfolk State University, now one of the largest HBCUs, is of relatively recent origin having first been established in 1935. For the first 35 years of its history, Norfolk State was actually a satellite campus of two other HBCUs. It started as the Norfolk satellite campus of Richmond's Virginia Union University and later became a satellite campus of Virginia State. Only in 1969 was it established as its own separate university.
Norfolk State's expansion was abetted by high level state support. Both the governor of Virginia in the 1940s, Colgate Darden, who was a Norfolk native and the Norfolk mayor for the late 40s (his younger brother Joshua Pretlow Darden) were staunch supporters of Norfolk State and aided its expansion. The editor of the Virginia Pilot newspaper, Louis I. Jaffé, was also a prominent supporter of the school.
Norfolk State has large number of both practical (business/accounting/nursing) and liberal arts major graduates and has one of the higher median earnings expectations for HBCUs at $40k. It is also well-known for its famous and formidable Spartan Legion Marching Band (the first video in their section below is top stuff).
