Today we head to H-Town to review Texas Southern University, the second largest HBCU in Texas after Prairie View A&M. Texas Southern's origin story is similar to that of Mississippi Valley State University. It was established by the Texas legislature as one of many last ditch attempts to prove separate can be equal and prevent Blacks enrolling in Texas public PWIs. It was founded in 1947 using the 1927 founded junior college Houston College for Negroes as a nucleus.
From the start Texas Southern was supposed to offer Black Texans everything they needed so they wouldn't advocate for entry into UT and other schools. Within a year of its opening it also had a law school and pharmacy school. However, despite the claimed intentions of its founding it was not adequately funded and supported like White institutions.
Texas Southern students were integral to local civil rights movement initiating sit-ins and even clashing with the police in 1967. In a more recent controversy, in 2020 the Governor appointed Board of Trustees changed the by-laws allowing them to remove any Texas Southern employee and they terminated then president Austin Lane accusing him of fraud. Later admitting he committed no wrongdoing, the Board had to pay him $900k.
