Mamadou Gassama, 22, risked his life to rescue the four-year-old, who was clinging by his fingertips to the railing in northern Paris on Saturday.

Mr Gassama, an illegal immigrant who arrived in France in September, was praised by Anne Hidalgo, the city mayor, who promised to help him to obtain a visa.

The man, identified as Mamoudou Gassama, is a migrant from Mali, a troubled former French colony in northwest Africa. Mr. Gassama had yearned to secure the requisite documentation to live legally in France, and his dream came true on Monday after a meeting with President Emmanuel Macron.

“I told him that in recognition of his heroic act he would have his papers in order as quickly as possible,” Mr. Macron said in a statement on Facebook after meeting with Mr. Gassama at the Élysée Palace in Paris.
