Facebook was popular & so was my space in 2007/2008. AOL/AIM buddy list was still popping....But was losing tracking to Facebook messages.
Only difference is twitter got popular...Then throw in Instagram & snap chat. Smartphones simply increased usage of social media.
To say it wasn't social media era is off base.
