The future of professional football in this city has been cast into doubt after San Diego voters overwhelmingly defeated a new downtown stadium plan for the San Diego Chargers in Tuesday’s election.

The team’s ballot measure trailed 58% to 42% out of 254,000 votes and 78.5% of precincts counted, according to unofficial results released early Wednesday by the Registrar of Voters in San Diego County.

Under current California law, the measure needed two-thirds of voters to approve it because it’s a tax hike for a specific purpose.

Without two-thirds approval, team owner Dean Spanos now has until Jan. 15 to make a decision: Should he move the franchise to Los Angeles to share a lucrative new stadium with the Los Angeles Rams?

Good. Public funds for stadiums so private teams can play in them and charge the same public just doesnt make sense, and if that populous says "no, your stadium is good, fund it yourself" then so be it. If they move, i dont think the people of SD will cry that much.

Pretty much this...

There is literally NO REASON to fund a stadium.

There is no benefit to the ppl outside of "we have a team, here"

They knew the downtown stadium deal wouldn't happen. Now its on to see what's up building a stadium next to their existing stadium- Qualcom. Now if that fails to happen then maybe they'll look to move to LA but with the Raiders supposedly now going to Vegas they're in no hurry
