Senate Republicans block minimum wage increase bill - The Washington Post

The Senate voted on Wednesday against going ahead on a bill that would gradually increase the federal minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $10.10 an hour, another rejection for legislation that has been a major focus of the Democrats' 2014 midterm campaign.

The final vote count was 54 to 42, with Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.), who supports the legislation, taking the procedural step of voting against the bill so that he can reintroduce it at a later time.

It was embarrassing. Only one Republican supported it.

I can understand not raising it across the board all at once but tie it to some local cost-of-living indexes....

and it still should get raised...incrementally to bring the Republicans along...

at the end of the day this is what it all comes down to. Fast food workers get paid minimum wage because there's an endless supply of them
That's false, at one point there was no minimum wage, no forty hour work week limit, no work age limit, no work condition standards etc.... with labor supply being relatively the same if not higher, all labor advancements have been won by force. Heck, baseball players used to have two jobs make ends meet, i guess there was a endless supply of them too? No, their income is determined by what they will tolerate and whether they are willing buss some heads over it, as it always has been.

baseball players got fed up and said, "pay me a million dollars to play" ?

labor participation rates didn't increase (and they increased quite a bit) until the later half of the 20th century.
