I work in a office at a high school with a baseball coach. He believes that LD kids should always be eligible since we know they have a problem in learning. Should they be treated differently because of the eligibility rules or should they have the same rules?

They should be put through the same tryout as any other kid, and if they can't follow directions or produce for the team then :camby:. fukk just giving them a spot just to feel better and depriving a more deserving student athlete their spot on the roster :aicmon:
besides, fukk around, that tard strength might come in handy :jawalrus:

Nah I think OP means should kids with learning disabilities be able to forgo the minimum requirements (ie: 2.0 GPA) in order to play. To that I say no

They have IEPs that outline all of the extra services they need to succeed academically. They're legally entitled to all of the resource room, 1 on 1 time with specialists, extra time on exams, and various other programs including the state paying for at home tutoring. I should know I've worked on both ends as both a special ed classroom teacher (15:1:1) and as a tutor - believe me your pockets can eat WELL on government money if you get a kid or 2 who needs like 8 hours a week of at home instruction :wow:

Having laid out an outline of what these kids are entitled to, they're no different than cross sections of regular ed and even gifted students: some will be motivated to use these extra services and improve (and the ones in this group tend to improve) and some won't give a damn regardless of how much preaching & prodding you do. These kids tend to be the ones who get eaten up by the system.

So no, they should be as accountable for their grades as much as the next kid, and if it's on a modified scale so be it. For the kid who isn't taking advantage of the extras, keeping him on the team just enables him to succumb to his disabilities more. Now if he gets it and begins to sincerely work his way back to a second chance, you've just given that young man a priceless life lesson. The absolute worse thing you can do to a special needs kid is make him believe the world gives a sh1t about his disabilities once he's out of school and that his IEP defines him. Once you go the "awww that's ok, I understand" route you've just activated step 1 to enabling the kid to succumb to his academic (or emotional) weaknesses for a lot longer than just his school years.

You cannot deny a kids right to tryout for sports or any other extra curricular activity
Yes, but my question was about kids who are ld but dont meet the required gpa i.e. 2.0. In order to play sports. Not about trying out for a team.

Read that shyt completely wrong

My bad :wow:

If you are ld then most likely the curriculum is made easier for you to accommodate your needs. so no if they can't make greases then they shouldn't be eligible

Ah. I see. I still stand by my previous statement but on an academic sense.
