Marvel Looking For A "Clean Slate" For Spider-Man Franchise

The Latino Review is reporting further on the possibility of a Spider-Man rights-sharing deal between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, and reveals the sticking points that may be preventing the deal from going through.

While the deal would see the two studios sharing rights to the character 60/40, Marvel wants to obtain complete creative control and start from a clean slate. In other words, they don’t want to bring the Spider-Man from the The Amazing Spider-Man film franchise into the Marvel Studios universe, they want to create their own version of the character from scratch.

This would include casting a brand new actor as Peter Parker to replace Andrew Garfield, who has played the role in both Amazing Spider-Man movies. This has been one of the primary reasons for Sony Pictures head Amy Pascal holding out on the deal, as she has a reputation for standing by her talent.

Marvel Studios would also shelve Sony’s plans for any Amazing Spider-Man spinoff movies, including the Aunt May solo film and the spinoff that was said to be led by female Spider-Man characters.

This is all part of Marvel’s efforts to distance any Spider-Man film they make from what has come before. The studio reportedly feels that Spider-Man origin stories and romance-driven films have been done, and want to introduce a teenage Peter Parker who already has a superhero career as Spider-Man. The films would primarily focus on the challenges of balancing his superhero life with the life of a teenager, with romance being, at most, a subplot.

The Latino Review also states that Marvel Studios has completed the script for Captain America: Civil War and, as of right now, the script does not include an appearance by Spider-Man. However, if Sony should come around to this deal, Marvel will likely alter the script to make room for at least a cameo by Spider-Man.

Captain America: Civil War opens May 6, 2016.

Spider-Man may appear in 'Captain America 3,' but not with Andrew Garfield

the.amazing.spider.man_.2.andrew.garfield.jpg

Despite their public protestations to the contrary, it looks like Sony is working with licensing Spider-man to Disney for use in Marvel's Captain America 3. Just not with Andrew Garfield in the spidey-suit.

The widely-rumored revelation comes from the email inbox of Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal, part of an unprecedented hack last month with new details continuing to leak out every day.

The Amazing Spider-man 2 was not the domestic success Sony needed it to be. Emails obtained by Mashable show that Sony had agreed to shelve plans for a writing deal on Amazing Spider-man 3 as of August 8, 2014.

Screen-Shot-2014-12-12-at-2.51.33-PM.png

Sony emails concerning Sinister Six and Amazing Spider-man 3 deals.

Moreover, it appears that Garfield may be out as Spider-man altogether. Garfield has been praised for his performance as Peter Parker, but his critical remarks that seemed to blame the studio for Amazing Spider-man 2's tepid box office and critical reception may have annoyed the wrong people.

Garfield also stood up Sony at a corporate dinner in July. Garfield's attendance was going to be mentioned by Sony CEO Kaz Hirai and he was supposed to sit with some top Sony executives. His absence (with less than an hour of notice) was seen as an affront and slight by the company's Tokyo bosses.

As of October 2014, it looks like Garfield is out of the franchise for good. In an email to The Amazing Spider-Man franchise producer Matthew Tolmach, Pascal outlines some potential plans for introducing the new Peter Parker and Spider-Man characters in Captain America 3.

I love introducing pp [Peter Parker] in cap but I know it comes with so many things since we won't give them what they want what will we give them?

We can say it's a cameo but I'll bet it's more and will involve some of his world and it will be peter and spidey right

Sony might license Spider-man to Marvel
In an email memo to herself sent on Oct. 21, 2014, Pascal reflected on the current state of theSpider-man franchise and outlined thoughts and questions related to how the Spider-mancharacter could appear in Captain America 3.

  • cap thre only:
  • 2. if we have spiderman in cap 3. what is our fee
  • and our back end. need script approval, casting approval of sm and aunt may and consultation of mays house in queens and any other spiderman locations we may need in future movies. also approval of new spiderman costume> how long is he is the movie? how closely does it follow the civil war story line? does the world find out who spiderman is? are there any other characters from the spiderman universe they are using? can we use one of the marvel characters in our future spiderman movies not produced by marvel.can we use cap to set up ss? can drew work with the russos to get this done? are we renting him out?

In the memo, Pascal also wanted to find out the status of Spider-man merchandise and how that would be impacted from an appearance in Captain America 3.

  1. current state of spiderman merchandise...where were they in 2007, 2011, 2012 and 2013, 2014....we need a base to measure this by? will it increase the value of not just spiderman but the other characters as well. can we put a value on this? what is the cap america merch? avengers? iron man?

  2. how can we put a box office value on allowing spiderman to be in cap? what is the good publicity worth to them and their movie and what is the opposite worth to us? can we put a box office value on putting spidey in their movie? not free.
Through the memo, Pascal expresses questions and concerns about how Sony can remain involved in the process.

  1. how do we participate n the process. read the script. meet the russos. early cuts of the movie various approvals
Moving on to a standalone Spider-man film, Pascal outlines some potential options on working on a film for a rebooted (again) franchise, using the actor cast in Captain America 3.

one time spiderman movie:
have to commit to a release date in 2017 which means we need to be shooting in winter 2015-2016

we finance the movie entirely and approve budget
we retain casting script director and budget approvals

marvel isnthe producer of the movie only and disney gets the merchandising and they help us like they did but even more so

we market and distribute the movie.....they have no approval of the marketing budget.

they have consultation in marketing materials because they are really good bu they dont have a tie breaker

The questions about a Spider-Man standalone would include what to do with Sony's plannedSinister Six film, slated for release in November 2016, as well as what to do with the team of individuals already involved with the Spider-man and Sinister Six projects at Sony.

would we have to dismantle ss?

can drew goddard write the sm original?

who would direct the sm movie?

what do we do with matt tolmach and avi?

they can not put spidey in future spiderman movies or team ups.

we need to keep animation rights for a theatrical relaesse spiderman move to be directed by lord and miller

we need to be able to make spiderman movies after this movie

we need to be able to make the girl team up movie

is it possible to put spidey in worlds without other characcters once we is with iron man and cap

can we have him in cap and then 6 months later in ss

comingle everything

we have a right to co finance any movie that spiderman is in and get a production credit

we get to make future movies with our characters and theirs in a collorative way but we dont need their approval

marvel produces a bunch of spiderman movies for sony the way they do for disney....all spiderman dominent movie are financed snd marketed by us event though disney will have the mrech on eerything

we can put the marvel and even disney logo on ours if we can put sony on theirs

morale and publicity

persception

This memo was drafted in October, nearly two months ago, which means that circumstances could have very much changed. Still, it's clear from this memo that Sony and Marvel have been in talks about licensing the Spider-man character.

Marvel Wants A Fresh Start With 'Spider-Man' Without Andrew Garfield

1418395383660

We previously reported on the potential deal between Marvel and Sony to share the rights to Spider-Man at a 60/40 split, and that deal seems to be the one that will potentially be jump-started if Sony Pictures Entertainment continues to stumble in their handling of the Spider-Man franchise.

Sony is understandably preoccupied with the consequences of a massive hack that includes leaked films, downed intranet services and the leak of documents and e-mails, but should this deal move forward, we've learned some more details about what Spider-Man's potential return to Marvel would entail.

The 60/40 split still looks to be the divide with Sony handling distribution. However, Marvel's not inclined to give Sony creative control over the character, nor planning on honoring the contracts with Sony's Spider-Stars. More poking into the origins of the Aunt May solo film and Female Spider movie rumors revealed that these were actual Sony Picture Entertainment plans that Marvel knew about and severely disliked. Now that Marvel can have the rights to the character back, they plan to wipe the slate with the Amazing Spider-Man universe.

IF the Marvel/Sony deal were to go forward, Andrew Garfield would no longer be Peter Parker and any baggage from existing films, Raimi or Webb, would be non-canonical, Marvel doesn't want any part of those films. The idea is that the Spider-Man romance movie has been played out over five installments, so any new Spider-Man films would focus on the difficulties of being a teenager and a superhero with a romance side-story, not the film's focus. Marvel also thinks that the origin story is well-trodden territory, so any Spider-Man movies under this deal would begin with Peter Parker already leading a dual life. Spider-Man making his debut in Captain America: Civil War is still a distinct possibility and would serve as the character's introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But as of now Spider-Man will NOT be in Civil War. I was told that they have a script nailed down.

Marvel's desire to remove Andrew Garfield from the role was a major point of contention with Sony's Amy Pascal, traditionally a stalwart defender of the talent in her films. However, current events leave her positioned slightly weakened.

I'm reading some of the articles now, this shyt is pure jokes. :dead:

:shaq2: @ not knowing who Fassbender is but :mjlol: @ the ruthlessness of it all.

Michael Fassbender's popularity ... and penis size ... were topics of conversation in the latest round of emails released by the Sony hackers ... revealing one big time producer who's feeling inadequate.

This most recent batch of emails revolves around discussion for the upcoming Steve Jobs biopic, which originally was supposed to be produced by Sony (it's now with Universal).

When the topic of Fassbender taking the lead role came up, somehow producer Michael De Luca brought up Fassbender's infamous manhood, saying he "makes you feel bad to have normal sized male genitalia."

Do the right thing, Sony.
:damn:
I like Marvel's gameplan.
Skipping the origin and jumping into the life of a 16 year old Peter Parker/Miles Morales would be fresh.
They would cake.
Robert Downey Jr. might be heading to the back of the bus if Marvel acquires those rights.
Spider-Man runs the place.

I don't mind creative people being creative but the reason the writing is on the wall for them is because based on the emails, they clearly have no idea what to do and when that happens, it's time to close shop. Things don't always work out but you gotta have a plan B or at least a clear vision of how to get to plan B and they don't. And after all of this private business has become very public, I'm sure a lot of bridges have been burned. Like they asked Rami to come back either as a director or producer which if Marc Webb didn't know about, he does now so at that point, how can he go to work for these people? So they're fukked
