no idea, funny enough that you mention am going to attempt with a regular dvd , on my other laptop which ive mentioned a couple times here already using handbrake it could get it done in about 35-45 min , my attempt will of course be from a already ripped movie since like someone said no drive on this

See..encoding DVDs and even HD files to make them more reasonably sized is always in my criteria. lol

Oh shyt! It don't have a Blu Ray drive off top? Yikes....
all the ultrabooks have to meet a certain weight/thinness standard before they can market themselves that way and there's no way to meet it and still fit an optical disk drive in. shyt, they don't have ethernet ports either. i dont miss my optical though since i got a desktop if i need one

the macbook pro could prolly handle what you want tho

Thinking about copping one for the wife.. Post that review when you get a chance @midwesthiphop

a couple of quick thoughts in about the two days i had :

-its extremely light I've said it before its SLIGHTLY heavier than my nexus , its the lightest laptop ive ever used, this is a good thing usually when am home i use my laptop on my lap , pause, so this important to me. Even though its light has a very solid feel to it

- its quite as fuk , my other laptop is pretty solid on this department too for about hour after that u can hear the fan if your playing movies and got tabs open its very noticeable, on the Air this thing don't make a sound no matter how much shyt open

- apps open up fast , i have office on it, and i opened both a excel and a word file at the same time,Air is quicker, again i don't have a slouch of windows laptop neither , chrome on my windows opens quicker though, i haven't used safari yet that could be it , but it could also be that my wireless is slow, i have a slow connection and we got two phones , two laptops and a roku connected all at the same time here

- some of the best speakers ive heard, this is disappoint to me because i have a beats laptop that has extra subs/speakers and the beats audio software , and the mac air for now comes out crisper and louder, but again that could be cause i ve tweaked my beats laptop a lot too

- i am a complete rookie to IOS, only apple device i owned years again between android phones was iphone 3GS, and that is only "intimidating" thing about this laptop to me , yea IOS seems simple enough but if never used it before and are coming from windows it does have a slight learning curve to it , i haven't downloaded any apps yet so cant speak on how that works

- the display is good ,my windows has a 1368 x 768 display this a 1440 x900, both are 13in screens, i opened up a ran 1080p videos on both them , load times were exactly for the same but the mac had clearer picture and view at all angles

** edit** the keyboard is back-lit also like my windows laptop, it works fine , may just be me but the track pad on the Air feels kind of funky cant explain it, and am good with trackpads, i use mouse at my work computers,

So for now overall, Ill say this if your girl is already in the IOS system, and you have the money, go for it . If she is not in the IOS system she really doesn't "need" a $1,300 laptop you could get her a laptop like my windows one + a nice tablet and still have change . So that's up for you to decide, if all she gonna do is listen to music, chat and browse the net, she don't need nothing this strong

I really didnt need a laptop being as i I have already have a good one and a old chromebook but at this price i know its a good investment if i ever need to usell it in the future or if i decided to be more invovled in the mac os , only had it for bout 48 hours so far its been able to handle anything ive thrown it , going to try messing games and imovies next

what programs do you use ?handbrake + makemkv i assume?

when i was burning my dvd collection this setupi could usually got the file size in half so it was a 1 gig file after burning , handbrake would turn it at bout 500-650mb file , there are settings on both apps that could make the files smaller but i never messed with so i could retain quality

People keep commenting on price..but most other ultra books are around the same price correct? And for some reason I dislike Windows 8 interface vs OSX...it seems like MS is doing too much with it

Once again, props on the details. Couldn't have gotten it better even if I had asked you to hit the bulletpoints that concerned me. I'm in the same boat. Never owned any Apple products outside of a few iPods. I have a 2010 or so Windows shyttop that's dying the death of 1000 overfed goldfish (MAJOR overheating, fans going out, etc.) so even your old machine would be a major upgrade. She's not a major computer user, and isn't into tech at all so [Red from Friday] it's really like boffa ours [/Red from Friday] till I decide if I want to get a second Air for myself, a MacBook Pro or just a cheaper Windows laptop at the beginning of the year.

My major concerns are speed, heat and weight in that order and it looks like all of those are covered. Don't think I'm making the wrong decision.....
