The stars and planets have always inspired a sense of wonder. Many cultures look skyward and see the face of the divine there. There's a cosmic dance on the grand scale, and one on the intimate scale, going on for each of us. Astrology is the study of patterns and relationships -- of planets in motion, our birth chart, synastry with others, the make-up of elements -- and using that knowledge as a tool to find meaning.

Zodiac Signs and Meanings:

Aries - The Ram
March 21 - April 19
Aries people are creative, adaptive, and insightful. They can also be strong-willed and spontaneous (sometimes to a fault). Aries people can be driven and are very ambitious often making them over-achievers in anything they set their mind to tackle. Aries are fire signs, and so too is their personality. They may be quick to anger, but don't take it personally, it's just their fiery, passionate personalities showing through. Aries signs have excellent sense of humor, and they get along with almost everyone at the party (and they DO know how to party). Aries can be impatient, but we love them anyway because they are devoted friends, lovers and family members - they are loyal to then end and will fight for their causes (usually supporting the underdog).

Taurus - The Bull
April 20 - May 20
Taurus zodiac signs and meanings, like the animal that represents them, is all about strength, stamina and will. Stubborn by nature, the Taurus will stand his/her ground to the bitter end (sometimes even irrationally so). But that's okay because the Taurus is also a loving, sympathetic and appreciative sign. The Taurus is very understanding and when we need someone to unburden ourselves to, we often share our deepest fears with the Taurians of the zodiac. Taurians are very patient, practical and efficient, they are excellent in matters of business and are also wonderful instructors/teachers. Although initially they may have their own best interest at heart, they are ultimately & endlessly generous with their time, possessions and love.

Gemini - The Twins
May 21 - June 20
Flexibility, balance and adaptability are the keywords for the Gemini. They are quick to grasp the meaning of a situation and act on it, often with positive effects. They tend to have a duality to their nature, and can sometimes be tough to predict how they will react. They can turn from hot to cold and may be prone to noticeable mood swings. However, they are generous signs with tendencies of being affectionate, and imaginative. They also inspire others easily as they seem to naturally motivate themselves - their charisma and accomplishments are infectious. Geminians are very supportive, and are especially good at promotions, sales, and driving hard bargains.

Cancer - The Crab
June 21 - July 22
Cancerians love home-life, family and domestic settings. They are traditionalists, and enjoy operating on a fundamental level. They love history, and are fascinated with the beginnings of things (heraldry, ancestry, etc.). The moon is their ruler, so they can be a bit of a contradiction and sometimes moody. However, they are conservative, so they'll be apt to hide their moods from others altogether. They have a reputation for being fickle, but they'll tell you that isn't true, and it's not. Cancerians make loyal, sympathetic friends. However Cancerians need alone time, and when they retreat, let them do so on their terms.

Leo - The Lion
July 23 - August 22
The zodiac signs and meanings of Leo is about expanse, power and exuberance. Leo's are natural born leaders, and they will let you know it as they have a tendency to be high-minded and vocal about their opinions. That's okay, because if you observe, the Leo is usually correct in his/her statements. Leo's have a savvy way of analyzing a situation and executing swift judgment with a beneficial outcome. It comes from being a leader. They are brave, intuitive, and also head-strong and willful. Beneath their dynamic persona lies a generous, loving, sensitive nature that they do not easily share with others. They might be a bit bossy, but those who know them understand this comes from a source need to do good, not (usually) from an inflated ego.

Virgo - The Virgin
August 23 - September22
Virgo's have keen minds, and are delightful to chat with, often convincing others of outlandish tales with ease and charm. Virgo's are inquisitive and are very skilled at drawing information from people. This trait also makes them naturally intuitive. Combine this with their remarkable memories, and we see an advanced, analytical personality. However the Virgo needs balance in their lives otherwise they may become short-tempered, impatient and self-serving. Virgo's are excellent teammates in work and social activities. They work well with others, although they freely express their opinions (even when unwarranted).

Libra - The Scales
September 23 - October 22
As their zodiac signs and meanings would indicate, Libra's are all about balance, justice, equanimity and stability. They easily surround themselves with harmony and beauty, but sometimes go to extremes to do so if their goals are unreasonable or unhealthy. With Venus as their ruling planet, Libra's are very understanding, caring, and often the champion of underdogs. They have keen intuitions, but often don't give themselves enough credit for their perceptions. They can be quiet and shy if not persuaded to come out of their shell. Ironically and in spite of their introverted nature they make excellent debaters, often proving a point from out of seemingly nowhere.

Scorpio - The Scorpion
October 23 - November 21
The Scorpio is often misunderstood. These personalities are bold and are capable of executing massive enterprises with cool control and confidence. They can surmount seemingly all obstacles when they put their mind to the task, and they have unshakable focus when the situation calls for it. Regardless of their bold nature, they are often secretive, but they are always observing behind their withdrawn manner. Being associated with a solar animal, (the scorpion) they are not withdrawn for long, and when they come out again they do so with force, vigor and determination. It is true, Scorpio's can be argumentative and pack a powerful sting, but that's simply because they see all opposition as a healthy challenge.

Sagittarius - The Centaur
November 22 - December 21
Here we have the philosopher among the zodiac signs and meanings. Like the Scorpio, they have great ability for focus, and can be very intense. However, they must channel their energy or they will waste time and wear themselves out going in too many directions at once. They are not very patient and expect quick results. However, when encountered with failure they make extreme comeback's often against incredible odds. They make loyal friends and lovers, but they do not handle commitment well as they refuse to be tied down while chasing philosophical pursuits.

Capricorn - The Goat
December 22 - January 19
Capricorn's are also philosophical signs and are highly intelligent too. They apply their knowledge to practical matters, and strive to maintain stability and order. They are good organizers, and they achieve their goals by purposeful, systematic means. They are very intuitive, although they don't share this trait with others freely. They do not deal well with opposition or criticism but a healthy Capricorn will often shrug off negative comments towards their character. They are patient and persevering - they know they can accomplish any task as long as they follow a their plan step-by-step. Capricorn's have broad shoulders, and typically take on other's problems with aplomb. Ironically, they rarely share their own problems and tend to go through bouts of inner gloom after a spell of dwelling on these problems.

Aquarius - The Water Bearer
January 20 - February 18
Often simple and unassuming, the Aquarian goes about accomplishing goals in a quiet, often unorthodox ways. Although their methods may be unorthodox, the results for achievement are surprisingly effective. Aquarian's will take up any cause, and are humanitarians of the zodiac. They are honest, loyal and highly intelligent. They are also easy going and make natural friendships. If not kept in check, the Aquarian can be prone to sloth and laziness. However, they know this about themselves, and try their best to motivate themselves to action. They are also prone to philosophical thoughts, and are often quite artistic and poetic.

Pisces - The Fish
February 19 - March 20
Also unassuming, the Pisces zodiac signs and meanings deal with acquiring vast amounts of knowledge, but you would never know it. They keep an extremely low profile compared to others in the zodiac. They are honest, unselfish, trustworthy and often have quiet dispositions. They can be overcautious and sometimes gullible. These qualities can cause the Pisces to be taken advantage of, which is unfortunate as this sign is beautifully gentle, and generous. In the end, however, the Pisces is often the victor of ill circumstance because of his/her intense determination. They become passionately devoted to a cause - particularly if they are championing for friends or family.

Brief Interpretations of the Personal Planets
Personal planets are the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars. They are so called because in the horoscope they are most closely related to the owner of the chart — his or her personal characteristics and the events in his or her personal life.

sun40.gif
The Sun

The purpose of life; the source of energy and creativity. Plays a central, prominent role in some area of life. Represents the heart in the body. Often, the Sun can symbolize the father in the person's life. In a horoscope of a woman, it can speak about her attitude toward men in general. The Sun highlights the house of the horoscope in which it is located. (Don't worry if you aren’t sure what houses are. We’ll study them in one of the coming lessons.)

moo40.gif
The Moon

The general circumstances of the person's life. Emotions, subconscious, habits, peculiarities of the way the person's body works. Changeability and adaptability in one or another area of life. In the body, it represents the stomach and breasts. The Moon is often related to the person's image of the mother and with his or her attitude towards children in general. In a man's horoscope, it can speak about his attitude toward women in general. Like the Sun, the Moon highlights the house of the horoscope in which it is situated.

mer40.gif
Mercury

Represents thinking, speech, communication, perception and transmission of information. Also shows peculiarities of the nervous system, reaction to surrounding events, the ability to find one's way in a situation, and dexterity. Demonstrates attitude towards learning and study — one’s preferred approach towards learning. In the body, Mercury is related to the nerves, brain, respiratory passages and intestines. Depending on the other factors, Mercury can have either a positive or a negative influence on the affairs of the house where it is located.

ven40.gif
Venus

Love, the ability to create and maintain harmony, the attitude toward the opposite sex. Represents the image of the beloved person (more often so in a male horoscope). The perception of beauty, art, and fashion; the ability to handle money and valuable items; the ability to relax and enjoy life, sensuality. In the body, Venus is related to the kidneys and the female organs. The influence of Venus on the affairs of the house where it is located is more often positive than not.

mar40.gif
Mars

Energy, will, action; the ability to make an effort and overcome difficulties. Bravery, aggressiveness; the ability to work and spend energy purposefully, to create some result. In a female horoscope, Mars is the image of the beloved man. Mars is related to the attitude toward the opposite sex in general, and shows sexuality. In the body, it represents the gall bladder and the male organs. Mars's influence on the affairs of the house where it is located can often be negative.

Brief Interpretations of the Social and Higher Planets
The social planets are Jupiter and Saturn, so called because in the horoscope they are most related to the person's integration with society and the role of society in his or her life. Moon Nodes, North Node (also known under its Latin name Caput Draconis, Dragon's Head) and South Node (Cauda Draconis, Dragon's Tail), are also social factors of the horoscope, but we will take a look at these separately.

The higher planets are Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. They are not visible via the naked eye and were not known to the astrologers of the past. In the horoscope, they are most closely related to either the psychological depths of the chart's owner or to his or her spiritual qualities. Quite often their movements and configurations can be related to factors beyond personal control, such as revolutions, earthquakes and other global events.

jup40.gif
Jupiter

Worldview, religion, science, and philosophy, as well as everything related to foreign countries, other cultures and traveling to far lands. Generosity and optimism, development and expansion. The ability to find one's way in society — to understand its goals and motifs. The ability to see the forest for the trees, to have an integral perception of many separate details. Represents the liver in the body. Jupiter is the great benefactor of traditional astrology since in most cases its influence on the house of the horoscope where it is situated is very positive.

sat40.gif
Saturn

Discipline, severity, responsibility, limitations; laws and rules established by society and the attitude of the person to them. Systematic approach, slowness, the ability to concentrate. Frugality, pessimism, methodicalness. In the body, Saturn represents the bones, teeth and hair. Saturn is traditionally considered to be the planet of difficulties and obstacles, so its influence on the house of the horoscope where it is located can often be negative.

ura40.gif
Uranus

A yearning for freedom, independence, a lack of desire to take into consideration rules and limitations. Unpredictability, originality, inventiveness and eccentricity. Interest in everything new, unusual, focused on the future. Uranus does not always manifest itself, and not in every life, but in the day of cardinal changes in one's life, its influence is like a burst of cold wind into a stuffy room: uncomfortable, unpleasant, maybe shocking, but afterward, it becomes easier to breathe.

nep40.gif
Neptune

Ideals, fantasies, illusions, super-sensitivity. Adds an incredible depth to both inspiration and despondency. A separation from reality, but at the same time, the ability to charm a lot of people with one's idea. Like Uranus, Neptune manifests itself irregularly and ambiguously — from complete chaos and self-destruction to missionary work and self-sacrificing service.

plu40.gif
Pluto

Secret power and might, hidden motive forces of the world. Intensity in all manifestations, perspicacity, the ability to manipulate people and bend them to one's will, the tendency to participate in mass movements. Pluto is as ambiguous in its manifestations as the other higher planets: in periods of life crises, it can manifest itself as a heavy loss, a complete annihilation of some aspect of one's life, but as a result of this, an opportunity may arise in which one can start everything anew, from scratch, a blank slate.

The 12 Astrological Houses
houses-wheel.jpg
There are 12 astrological houses, and each house is in analogy with one of the signs. However, contrarily to signs, which spread invariably over 30 degrees of the zodiacal circle, house sizes may greatly vary from one house to the other. House calculations are based on the exact birth time.

It is important to note that most astrologers consider that whenever a planet is near a house cusp, it belongs to the said house. The threshold from a given house to the next depends on the authors' approach. It may vary from 1° to 6°, sometimes 8° or 10°. Some astrologers, quite the minority, prefer not to follow this rule. On Astrotheme, by default, we have chosen the Placidus system, and we take a classical stand, as far as the threshold is concerned. Thus, a planet found at less than 3° of the following house is considered to be in that house. We apply 2° in the case of the AS and the MC. On certain applications or on the Astrological Portrait, we offer the possibility to change these options and to select the equal houses or the Koch system. You may also decide to cancel the shift into the following house. Please note that such shift never involves the sign: a planet posited at 29°29'29" Taurus is in this sign, and by no means in Gemini. When it comes to signs, total change is the rule, contrary to houses.

The 1st house, referred to as the Ascendant: the Self, demeanour, and vitality.
It describes the personality, the natural demeanour of the native as he faces the outside world, and also his physical appearance. It is an essential component for the interpretation of the natal chart, and it is one of the four angles of the natal chart (the four most important houses, which are dealt with below). It is located on the left hand side of the natal chart and corresponds to the place where the sun rises.

The 2nd house: money earned and material goods.
It describes material goods, how they are managed, and how money is earned. In brief, it includes all financial matters but also represents greed and all sorts of possessions.

The 3rd house: immediate surroundings, siblings, short trips, and studies.
It deals with communication, the close environment (siblings, colleagues, schoolmates), primary and secondary education, apprenticeship. It also describes short trips, transportation, modern means of communication and all practical things.

The 4th house, referred to as the Imum Coeli: family, home, origins, heredity, and the father.
It represents the native's family, ancestors, roots, and home, both the home he comes from and the one he will set up. This house also describes the real estate patrimony, childhood, and emotions. It is located at the bottom of the chart, and like the Ascendant, it is an angular house. For some authors, 4th house represents the mother instead of the father.

The 5th house: love matters, pleasure, leisure, children, and creations.
It describes the person's creative and recreational activities, his hobbies, as well as his love affairs, his luck in gambling, his relationships with children in general, including his own. This house covers all pleasant things in the native's life.

The 6th house: everyday life, daily work and colleagues, lower-ranking co-workers, and health.
It describes the native's everyday life, his behaviour at work, minor obligations, servitudes, lower-ranking co-workers, and pets. It also concerns health, medicines and minor illnesses.

The 7th house, referred to as the Descendant: unions, marriage, other people, associations, and contracts.
It is opposite the 1st house and thus, represents other people, the native's behaviour towards other people, his partner (spouse or associate). It concerns contracts, associations, marriage and open enemies. It is through the 7th house that the native perceives other people. It is opposite the ASC, and is located on the right hand side of the natal chart and corresponds to the place where the sun sets.

The 8th house: passions and crises, transformations, death, financial investments, and sexuality.
It concerns the native's birth and death. However, it does not necessarily mean actual physical death. It may be a symbolic death, and thus, it is synonymous with evolution and transformation. This house also represents inheritances, money earned by other people, but also sexuality, power, all things hidden, and interest in occultism.

The 9th house: travels, abstract and higher concepts, spirituality, and foreign matters.

It is the realm of spirituality and philosophy, higher ideals, faraway travels, both physical and inner ones. Contrarily to the 3rd house, this house represents higher education and universities, as well as the understanding of abstract topics. It is also related to law and legality, and religion.

The 10th house, referred to as the Midheaven: social success, professional destiny, and the mother.
It is opposite the 4th house and corresponds to the native's professional career, as well as his social elevation as compared to his family background. It symbolises his ambitions and his achievements in the society. It is also related to the general public, potential fame, and the mother's influence. The 10th house is in the Southern part of the natal chart and located at its top.

The 11th house: friends, collective projects, supports and protections in life.
It represents the native's projects, his friends, and his protectors. It describes the nature of his friends, his group activities, and the place he occupies within the group, contrarily to the more individualistic 5th house. This 11th house is related to all kinds of humanitarian topics.

The 12th house: enemies, difficulties, solitude, hidden ordeals, and secrets.
It corresponds to the native's inner self, ordeals underwent his whole life through, hidden enemies, and serious illnesses. It is related to places of confinement such as hospitals, prisons, convents, etc., and also includes solitude and major inner crises.

The Tradition classifies houses because, on the one hand, their influence on an individual is not equally important, and on the other hand, they have different specificities in terms of characterology. There are three classifications. The first one deals with accentuation, and the other two, with quadrants and hemisphere emphasis. Here is a short outline of the three classifications:

The Accentuations
Houses are referred to as being angular, succedent or cadent.

Angular houses are located at the four angles of the natal chart: the 1st house (the Ascendant or ASC), the 10th house (the Midheaven or MC), the 4th house (the Imum Coeli or IC), and the 7th house (the Descendant or DES). They are the most important houses of the natal chart, especially regarding the Ascendant and the Midheaven. If natal planets are posited near the angles (at less than 8 or 10 degrees, for instance), they become very prominent, and in many cases, they are part of the dominant planets.

Succedent houses are located immediately after the angular houses: they are the 2nd, 5th, 8th, and 11th houses. They are less important than the angular houses and bring about less dynamism. However, they are a factor of stability.

Cadent houses are the four following houses, i.e. the 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th houses. Although they are even less important than the succedent houses, they endow people having many planets in cadent houses with mobility and vivacity.

Thus, we can say that there is an analogy between the principles of quadruplicities (Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable mode), and sign and house accentuations.

The Quadrants
The Zodiac is divided into four quadrants of the same size.

The first quadrant comprises the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd houses. They symbolise levels of consciousness of egotistical nature: persons with many planets in these sectors tend to pay utmost attention to their own interests and do not spontaneously care for others, but they are particularly dynamic or charismatic.

The second quadrant comprises the 4th, 5th, and 6th houses. Sociability, creativity and daily work are highlighted. These qualities may be detrimental to the native's independence.

The third quadrant comprises the 7th, 8th, and 9th houses, which are of sheer interpersonal nature. Persons with many planets in these sectors are thirsting for company, and they need to charm and to progress through other people.

The fourth quadrant comprises the 10th, 11th, and 12th houses, the sector of spiritual and humanitarian actions. Persons with many planets in these sectors are likely to be detached from individualistic considerations and are not interested in the practical side of things.

The Hemispheres
The Northern hemisphere comprises the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th houses. It is the lower half of the natal chart and indicates a personal, egotistical, subjective, and internalised typology.

The Southern hemisphere comprises the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th houses. It is the upper half of the natal chart and indicates an active, objective, externalised, and group-oriented typology.

The Eastern hemisphere comprises the 10th, 11th, 12th, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd houses. It is the left half of the natal chart, near the Ascendant. It indicates a typology marked by independence and personal action.

The Western hemisphere comprises the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th houses. It is the right half of the natal chart, near the Descendant. It indicates the importance of communication, dependency on other people, as well as actions taken in relation with, and according to others.
