A LITTLE BIT OF SENEGAL

Senegal officially the Republic of Senegal, is a country in West Africa. It owes its name to the Sénégal River that borders it to the east and north. Senegal is externally bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and has a coastline of 531 km. The Gambia is almost an enclave within Senegal. Dakar, the capital city of Senegal, is continental Africa’s westernmost city.
Although predominantly Muslim, Senegal is a tolerant secular state, whose ethnic groups have lived together peacefully for several generations and have intermingled to some extent. Interethnic marriages and Islam are unifying factors. Wolof is the national language spoken by more than 80% of the population.

The spread of education and increased economic opportunity have modified a traditional social structure based on kinship, but the majority of the people adhere to the traditional values of Kersa (respect for others) and Tegin (good manners). Teranga (hospitality) is also a common value Senegalese share.

General information:
• Ethnic Groups : Wolof, Haal-Pulaar, Serer, Diola, Mandinka, Lebou, Soninke, ...
About 50,000 Europeans (mostly French) as well as smaller numbers of Lebanese, Mauritanians and other arabs reside in western Senegal’s cities
• Major languages: Wolof (lingua franca), French(official), Fulani
• Major religion: 94% Islam, 5% Christian, 1% Animist
• Governance: Republic under multi-party democratic rule, Senegal is the only West African country where the army has never seized power
• Population: 13,300,410 (July 2013 est.)
• Capital: Dakar (est. 2,8 million)
• Urban population: 42% of total population (2010)
• Major trade partners: Mali, India, France, China, UK, Nigeria, Netherlands, Italy, Spain

Hospitality is given such importance in Senegalese culture that it is widely considered to be part of the national identity. The Wolof word for hospitality is "Teranga" and it is so identified with the pride of Senegal that the national football team is known as the ''Lions of Teranga''.

If you have nice pictures of Senegal, you are welcome to post them here.

A LITTLE BIT OF THE AFRICAN SAHEL REGION

The Sahel is the ecoclimatic and biogeographic zone of transition between the Sahara desert in the North and the Sudanian Savannas in the south. It stretches across the north of the African continent between the Atlantic Ocean and the Nile River. The Arabic word sāḥil ساحل literally means "shore, coast", describing the appearance of the vegetation of the Sahel as a coastline delimiting the sand of the Sahara.

The traditional Sahel covers parts of the territory of (from west to east) Senegal, southern Mauritania, most of Mali, northern Burkina Faso, most of Niger, northern Nigeria, northern Cameroon, middle belt of Chad, (some include Southern Algeria, parts of Sudan see Darfur). In these countries the Sahel has attracted a population as varied as its environment. Some are semi-nomadic cattle herders, moving with the seasonal flooding of the Niger or Senegal River for ex. Others are farmers, making out a living from millet and sorghum. The border with the Sahara and the Sudanic zone is fluid and many of the people found in one region can be found in the other. But many groups owe their culture strictly to the Sahel.

Over the history of the Western Sudan region the region has been home to some of the most advanced kingdoms benefiting from trade across the desert. Collectively these states are known as the Sahelian kingdoms. The historical Western Sudan had no fixed geopolitical boundaries or singular ethnic or national identities.Consequently historical Western Sudan overlaps in culture, history and ethnicities with the core Sahel. The Sahel states were limited from expanding south into the forest zone of the Ashanti and Yoruba as mounted warriors were all but useless in the forests and the horses and camels could not survive the heat and diseases of the region.

General information:
• Ethnic Groups : Wolof, Hausa, Fulani, Songhay, Daza, Soninke, Mossi, Malinke, Kanuri, Zaghawa, Bambara and many more
• Major languages: Songhay, Soninké, , Bambara, Hausa, Arabic, Fulani, Malinké, Wolof, Moré, Zarma and many more
• Major religion: Islam
