I was thinking not long ago about how there used to be a lot of soundtracks, and it would expose us to different rappers/sounds that maybe we weren’t used to. But not only were they good for promoting new talent, they were a good way for established rappers to keep us fed between regular albums. It made me wonder who was most prolific. So I did the knowledge.
I went through 85 different “Urban” Music Motion Picture Soundtracks to compile these results.
Caveat - I did not include Soundtracks that are credit as an album for one artist. So you will not see results for He Got Game, American Gangster, or the Choices series.
SCORING:
A regular-degular soundtrack song is worth 3 points.
But because all songs are not created equal -
Soundtrack Singles are worth 6
If it became a hit, it is worth 8
If it became a classic, it is worth 10
However: Lettuce be real. Some movies were made just to make soundtracks.
We all know this. So, points are less if the artist is an actor in/subject of the movie,
or is an executive at the helm of the soundtrack. In these cases:
Song is 2 points
Singles are worth 5
Hits are 7
Classics are worth 8
To illustrate:
”Lose Yourself” is an all-time classic song now.
If anyone else made that song, it would be worth 10 points.
But Eminem is the star of that movie and the Executive Producer of the Soundtrack, so it is worth 8.
He has a couple other songs on there: “8 Mile“ was a single, so it is worth 5.
There are 2 other songs he’s on that we’re just regular songs, so they are worth 2 points each.
So Eminem scored 19 points for himself on that soundtrack alone.
That’s a pretty good haul, considering that an artist would have to have 7 random soundtrack songs
to reach that number. And there are a good number of MCs that have that many.
So let’s see the results…
