SAN FRANCISCO – Oct 13, Top universities turn out black and Hispanic computer science and computer engineering graduates at twice the rate that leading technology companies hire them, a USA TODAYanalysis shows.

Technology companies blame the pool of job applicants for the severe shortage of blacks and Hispanics in Silicon Valley.

But these findings show that claim "does not hold water," said Darrick Hamilton, professor of economics and urban policy at The New School in New York.

"What do dominant groups say? 'We tried, we searched but there was nobody qualified.' If you look at the empirical evidence, that is just not the case," he said.

As technology becomes a major engine of economic growth in the U.S. economy, tech companies are under growing pressure to diversify their workforces, which are predominantly white, Asian and male. Leaving African Americans and Hispanics out of that growth increases the divide between haves and have-nots. And the technology industry risks losing touch with the diverse nation — and world — that forms its customer base.

On average, just 2% of technology workers at seven Silicon Valley companies that have released staffing numbers are black; 3% are Hispanic.

But last year, 4.5% of all new recipients of bachelor's degrees in computer science or computer engineering from prestigious research universities were African American, and 6.5% were Hispanic, according to data from the Computing Research Association

Those are pitful #'s (10% with degrees, 5% hiring) but Tech jobs aren't limited to Silicon Valley.

Go to NY/DC and all you'll see is Minority folks in IT departments.
or ATL or Boston or Houston

No one said this shyt would be easy. We're minorities, but that shouldn't stop us from trying.

sidebar: I'm in the Bay area right now for biz travel....I found out about a a startup networking event here in "silicon valley" last week...there were two other black people out of about 30 people. Both of them avoided eye contact and any kind of interaction with me and each other....:mjlol:

#certgang come in here and break this down for us
nikkas in all industries need to be more flexible as far as location, position title, duties, etc... (Especially in IT)

Or create your own company..

Because we aren't immigrants for the most part, we live in the land of our oppressors, aren't real citizens.. and are only wanted for prison labor and entertainment.

But for the most part- if you are working with new technologies you're good.

This is very true, I have a friend who applied to the top tech companies and they couldn't make it past the physical interview. They liked them over the phone because they didn't have a voice that could determine if they were black or not. However when they went to the real interview they didn't call back. Too chocolate for technology brehs.
