GET OVER HERE! The highly anticipated upcoming Mortal Kombat movie has finally found itself a director! Simon McQuoid, a renowned commercial director and filmmaker from Australia is currently in talks to direct the Hollywood reboot, according to Variety. Unlike the 1995 Mortal Kombat film by Alien vs. Predator director Paul W.S. Anderson, this reboot is expected to sport a larger budget and produce a higher quality experience.

Director of horror mega-hits SAW and The Conjuring, James Wan is attached to produce the picture with Michael Clear from Atomic Monster. Lawrence Kasanoff, who produced the 1995 Mortal Kombat as well as its sequel MK: Annihilation and True Lies will act as executive producer.

The latest draft of the film's screenplay was written by Greg Russo.

In terms of plot, little is known where this reboot will be heading. It will likely follow the storyline of the original game, which involved Earth realm defenders battling the evil forces of Outworld in an attempt to save Humanity. Of course, iconic characters like Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Scorpion, Sub Zero, Raiden and Kitana should play prominent roles in the film's plot, however until an official synopsis is released, we won't know for sure.

Previously, Mortal Kombat made a thunderous comeback with the release of Mortal Kombat X, which introduced fans to a new generation of heroes and villains. Though, the game's own campain acted as a passing of the torch from old characters to new, we're hoping this film focuses on the iconic, more notable characters from the franchise.

As new details concerning the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot are released, we'll be sure to keep you updated!

While fans have gotten the chance to re-immerse themselves in the world of Mortal Kombat in the recently released Mortal Kombat 11, the cinematic reboot of the fighting game franchise is expected to begin pre-production this month in Australia.

Australian government officials Steven Marshall and David Psioni and production consultant Greg Basser confirmed the film is expected to begin principal photography in Adelaide Studios' Sound Stages soon as the production assembles its crew to begin constructing sets for the film and visual effects teams for its action.

"Mortal Kombat will be the largest film production in South Australia’s history and highlights the importance of engaging with the world’s major production houses," Premier of South Australia Steven Marshall declared in a statement to Variety. "The state government’s investment in Mortal Kombat will enhance the scope and reach of our production and post production capabilities, bringing the promise of fantastic new jobs for the local film industry."

For producer James Wan, the Australian location had been a welcome experience while filming Aquaman, with the prolific filmmaker looking to take advantage of the location's tax incentives and further the studio's working relationship with the country.

"I’m really happy and excited to be bringing another show back to Australia with Mortal Kombat, especially after having such a great experience filming Aquaman,” Wan explained.

The adaptation is being produced by Wan through New Line Cinema, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. The screenplay is written by Greg Russo and marks the feature directorial debut of Simon McQuoid. However, no cast or release date has been announced by New Line at this time.
