With that being said, after you've read the article and shown love, how do you get the alert to stop popping on your screen every 5 seconds??

Yo, thanks for reading. I know it might sound like some Grade A bullshyt, but I don't ever write my freelance pieces out of self-interest, it's always about the bigger picture. Barkley with a show on race (not racism, but race) on TNT called "The Race Card" is absolutely unacceptable, specially in the current social climate. The only way to force a mainstream conversation about this is to make the dissenting voice heard loud and clear. So please, for the sake of black Americans and the sake of decency share this story far and wide. If y'all post on other boards, share it there. If y'all got an ESPN account, share it in their comment sections. Know someone who knows someone who might give it a bigger audience? Shoot that person a link. Have a reddit account? Definitely share it there.

Thanks.

Wow. I don't think I've ever read such a personal attack on a public individual before. Check that Michael Eric Dyson's takedown of Cornel West - The Ghost of Cornel West. But even that was somewhat sympathetic though. I understand your reasoning, but it pains me to read such a brutal takedown of another Black man.

While nothing you wrote is factually not true, I do think you could have given Barkley some credit for actions he has taken in the past. The picture your article paints of Barkley

And you also could have put Charles Barkley and his opinions on race in the context of African-American history. There has always been a debate between African-Americans about the best way forward. Starting with Booker T. Washington with his "Cast Your Bucket Down Where You Stand" speech and W.E.B. DuBois response in his essay "Of Mr. Booker T. Washington and Others." But even in that response, DuBois went out of the way to portray Booker T. Washington in a positive light and focus on disagreements on policy rather than attacking the individual. In an ideal world is Charles Barkley the best person to host this show? No. But can this opportunity be used to promote the viewpoints of African-Americans who would otherwise never be given an outlet? Yes.

That's why I am holding judgment until the show airs. They could easily have great Black thinkers and intellectuals on the show explaining why Charles' opinion is wrong and advocating for a position that is more in line with the majority of African-Americans. Perhaps the best way for African-Americans to move forward isn't to silence individuals like Charles Barkley but rather to deconstruct their argument and show them where they are wrong. Millions of Americans share Charles Barkley's views of Black pathology and they are not going anywhere. Ignoring them doesn't work, but having the two viewpoints clash would make for great tv.

Now if it's a simplistic show with Barkley just stating his opinion and making corny jokes, then I'd completely agree with you. But it is very real possibility that it could be a panel discussion ala Bill Maher.
