Americans favor taxing the rich and for government involvement in healthcare, against unlimited immigration and favor tighter immigration policies.

Because people are two scared of breaking the status quo. They'd rather bytch about the current system in place rather than do anything meaningful to change it.

political system can't just change based on the current fads

we have more parties in Canada and end up with minority coalition governments which traditionally do LESS than MAJORITY governments. think of all the hurdles that parties face when they don't have control of all the bodies of government to get shyt passed and stamped. now multiply that by infinite when you have more parties. they won't solve the problem just multiply it. and create even more niche sets that clash, appeal to more fringe groups, exploit more division. this one is for gays, this one is for conservatives, this one is for ______ now picture them having to share power to govern.

if anything the best reform to make for American parties is to enact legislature that makes it illegal for political parties to weaponize race and exploit it. If the system is to work right then both parties have to have incentive to fight for all the votes rather than completely discounting anyone. there should be penalties for leaning into racism that cripple that angle on a systematic level.

It would be bad and if you don't understand it you skipped civics classes. We don't have a parliamentarian system where multiple parties support or oppose each other in order to elect a prime minister.

Because nobody here is prepared to contend with the multifaceted backroom dealings and corruption that comes with having to put together coalition governments. The US system can't even deal with conservative extremists bumrushing the GOP, how do you think five entire political parties will work?
