If you go to Wal*mart or K-mart, I would just stick with Sony or some known name-brand.

Oh yeah. I bought my first aftermarket stereo unit from crutchfield in the early 90s. They used to send out catalogs with complete charts on which audio unit is going to fit in your car's slot.

300 w/ navi......let me know if you find that.

Right now I'm looking the pioneer avic x850 / appradio 3, and alpine ine w940.

I've been looking for a few months, and I think the appradio is probably the best choice decent power, and you can open it up to get functionality from the apps on your phone...but long term its probably better to go with something that has navi built in.

IMO Your best bet is to stack up on those IT certs and acquire a flagship european sedan that comes from factory with a harman/kardon sawround sound system

I'll say it again. Go to crutchfield if you want to avoid wiring harness headaches, especially if this is your first time doing it.
Splicing wires and reconnecting wires isn't that hard, but matching up wires from the receiver to your car isn't straightforward as manufacturer's don't always go with the same colored wire as other car manufacturers or stereo makers.
