The Land That Time Forgot
Why are we calling 16 and 17 year olds "boys"? I prefer to call them young men.

16 and 17 year olds are still children. They are minors legally and socially. Their bodies
and brains are still biologically in development-mode.

Are these "young men" expected to complete parental CSS and FAFSA financial forms by themselves to apply for scholarships?

Are these "young men" expected to tour America for college visits by themselves?

When high schools feature financial aid and scholarships seminars for students and parents,
should these "young men" attend them on their own?

The sleepless city
Im going to go out on a limb here and say, in certain neighborhoods, coming up it wasn't seen among most of your peers as being "cool" to be into your books, we pretty much show out for the girls that like that cool bad boy esque ish...be the class clown etc... but then those same girls will move on and leave u looking stupid, I've seen it first hand...fathers please be an example, because its easy for a young Black male to get distracted and stray out here...

I think they should adopt more all male schools for black boys to be honest... and more black male teachers. Our rappers are practically our teachers in all honesty.
Between middle school and high is where the problem usually starts, if it hasn't been nipped in the bud earlier on.

These young men are mature enough to get into all types of sh*t, but not mature enough to desire to enhance themselves? I don't disagree that parental involvement is important but the desire is embedded in the child regardless. The key is instilling that drive at an early age, and then once that child gets to HS, he or she will do most of the work.

If you have to hold your sons or daughter's hand for them to do what it takes to pursue a college education, you failed in the earlier stages of their life. At that point it should be up to the student to do the heavy lifting and the parent to advise and support throughout the process.

Unlike other groups, black boys are expected are expected to achieve
on their own, without family and community support.

We tell the nine-year old black boy: "You're on your own, little man."

In terms of early reading, the 2103 National Assessment of Educational Progress shows that only 34 percent of fourth graders read proficiently. The figure is 14 percent for African-American boys and 18 percent for Hispanic boys, while 42 percent of white boys score proficient, according to KIDS COUNT. Data also link children of color to several risk factors associated with weaker reading skills.

yep... black mothers don't even say as many words to their male children as they say to their female children......
