Sen. Bernie Sanders, whose liberal call to action has propelled his long-shot presidential campaign, is proposing an array of new programs that would amount to the largest peacetime expansion of government in modern American history.

In all, he backs at least $18 trillion in new spending over a decade, according to a tally by The Wall Street Journal, a sum that alarms conservatives and gives even many Democrats pause. Mr. Sanders sees the money as going to essential government services at a time of increasing strain on the middle class.

His agenda includes an estimated $15 trillion for a government-run health-care program that covers every American, plus large sums to rebuild roads and bridges, expand Social Security and make tuition free at public colleges.

To pay for it, Mr. Sanders, a Vermont independent running for the Democratic nomination, has so far detailed tax increases that could bring in as much as $6.5 trillion over 10 years, according to his staff.

A campaign aide said additional tax proposals would be offered to offset the cost of some, and possibly all, of his health program. A Democratic proposal for such a “single-payer” health plan, now in Congress, would be funded in part through a new payroll tax on employers and workers, with the trade-off being that employers would no longer have to pay for or arrange their workers’ insurance.

For many years, government spending has equaled about 20% of gross domestic product annually; his proposals would increase that to about 30% in their first year. As a share of the economy, that would represent a bigger increase in government spending than the New Deal or Great Society and is surpassed in modern history only by the World War II military buildup.

By way of comparison, the 2009 economic stimulus program was estimated at $787 billion when it passed Congress, and President George W. Bush’s 2001 tax cuts were estimated to cost the federal treasury $1.35 trillion over 10 years.

Sanders Response:

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) is pushing back on the eye-popping estimated price tag of his progressive wish list of proposals he has offered on the campaign trail.

The Wall Street Journal reported in a front-page story on Tuesday that Sanders' proposals would total around $18 trillion over 10 years, which the publication said would amount to the "largest peacetime expansion of government in modern American history."

That would include an estimated $15 trillion over a decade for a revamping of the federal healthcare system to a government-run, "Medicare for all" single-payer approach.

In an appearance on MSNBC Tuesday, Sanders disputed The Journal's total. He argued that the paper did not take into account the spending reductions that would come with the enactment of a single-payer-type healthcare plan.

"That is not the reality. We will be responding to The Wall Street Journal on that," Sanders told MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell of the overall estimate.

"I think most of the expense that they put in there, the expenditures have to do with the single-payer healthcare system," he continued. "They significantly exaggerated the cost of that, and they forgot to tell the American people in that article that that means eliminating the costs that you incur with private health insurance."

Sanders, right now the main Democratic challenger to presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton, has not released a detailed healthcare plan as of yet. The Journal relied on an analysis of similar legislation proposed by Rep. John Conyers (D-Michigan) and sponsored by 44 other House Democrats.

Hes gonna stop the war and reduce military spending.

Also raise taxes on the rich and close loopholes for corporation. This shyt will pay itself out.

Plus 18 trillion is nothing to america. Plus we'll be cutting down on all these ridiculous expenses, like fukking 2 grand for an MRI :dead:

Things are starting to heat up. If he plays this well, he can separate himself from Hillary very nicely.

On the other hand, this is cannon fodder for the "Bernie is a communist" camp.

well Bernie's main argument like @Mook mentioned is how he would be cutting out private health insurers' expenses drastically reducing the number.

still a lot of this will be a hard sell to a divided congress that can't act on anything.

Been saying this. I don't know where Bernie is going to get the money to pay for all the shyt he stay talking about.

$18 trillion over a decade = $1.8t a year. us collects $3t in tax revenue a year..
bringing military spending to pre-2001 levels frees up .3 trillion. add in a mix of increased tax revenue and some debt.. not impossible

you also have to remember this is new spending on top of what we already have committed for the next 10 years.

I was just coming in here to point out that spread over 10 years that $18 trillion isn't really the huge problem that the WSJ is trying to paint it as especially not when you compare it to some of the yearly costs of other things that this country has wasted money on.
Still will be used to paint Sanders as some wild-eyed, tax and spend, Socialist maniac though.
