On China visit, Macron attempts diplomatic balancing act on Ukraine

Speaking at the Hague on Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron spoke of his vision for a new era of “European sovereignty” in which the Continent can choose its own partners and “shape its own destiny”. His address was briefly disrupted by protesters who attempted to shout him down.

On China visit, Macron attempts diplomatic balancing act on Ukraine

So Macron and Biden clearly aren't on the same page regarding Russia as he appears to not agree with the way America is all about confrontation with Russia.

"Days before the visit, a French presidential official told reporters that Macron aims to “stand firm” towards Xi on Ukraine while taking “another path” from the directly confrontational position adopted by the US.

The “alternate path” discourse takes a leaf out of China’s playbook following the diplomatic hits Beijing received with the Covid crisis and Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine."

Is he wanting to soften his stance on Russia?

Lowkey it feels as if he is onboard with getting America out the paint as far as worldwide dominance goes

It's on par with how France has viewed geopolitics :yeshrug:

That stance was birthed with De Gaulle and except some like Sarkozy, usually French presidents wants France to be autonomous. Obviously, France will side with the US most of the times because they share the same values but France does not want to be a follower, that's all.

The current controversy with the speech he gave is a translator error. He said "crisis that would not be ours" but the translation went with "crisis that aren't ours". Europe has no official stance on Taiwan and tries to plays both sides because it knows Taiwan is a legitimate democracy but doesnt want to anger China and its trade.

Macron's idea of Europe is to be a bigger player in the game and not just a US vassal. I share that view tbh. Europe geopolitically is a midget and like France it will almost always side with the US but it is also at the mercy of another isolationnist Republican president.

More than Putin invading Ukraine, I feel like it's Trump mismanaging Covid that helped NATO to rise back up as it directly led to Biden. Because before NATO was actually brain dead. In that regard, Macron has always had the same stance of a stronger Europe. Nothing new in this behavior tbf.

I agree with most of what you said, except that even with Biden winning, nothing would have galvanized the Europeans and reminded them of why NATO is even necessary nearly as much as Russia invading Ukraine.

A thousand Biden speeches still don't add up to witnessing an unprovoked invasion of a sovereign nation.

You've got Finland joining NATO, Sweden trying to do so, and even Switzerland broke neutrality regarding the war. You don't get all that without an invasion of Ukraine.

Definitely. I just meant it in the way that Trump had Europeans almost finding NATO useless at some point. I'd say Biden made a 180 there and gave Europeans reassurances that they needed.

Like @Liu Kang this is what French policy has always been about. And low-key a whole lot of Euros agree that Europe should be less dependent from the US, which only makes sense. What Americans seem to have a hard time understanding is that Europe is a tiny continent and doesn't have the luxury of two oceans isolating it from the world. So it can't afford to get powerful neighbours TOO pissed off. That's why for example back when the EU expanded in 2004 there were already worries about how a. it would dilute the EU and b. it would trigger Russia. Needless to say, the UK and the US were big fans of the expansion, also as it would diminish French influence in the EU.

That being said quite obviously he's trying to win some points where he can with the whole disastrous domestic scene.
