'Spider-Man: Homecoming' Is Now The Top Grossing Superhero Movie Of 2017

Spider-Man just climbed to the top of this year’s superhero box office.

The global box office total for Spider-Man: Homecoming now stands at $874 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing superhero movie released in 2017.


That distinction was previously held by fellow Marvel Studios release Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which has a global box office total of $863.4 million.

Earlier in September, Spider-Man: Homecoming’s $70.3 million opening in China helped propel the film past DC Films’ Wonder Woman, which is the highest-grossing film in the DC Extended Universe.


Spider-Man: Homecoming remains the second-highest grossing Spider-Man movie, for now, falling behind Spider-Man 3’s global box office total of $890.9 million.

Domestically, Spider-Man: Homecoming still trails behind both Wonder Womanand Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 with $331.9 million, making it the fourth-highest grossing film of the year in the United States.


Spider-Man: Homecoming is the first film created out of the partnership between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, which allows Spider-Man, whose film rights are still owned by Sony, to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Star Tom Holland first appeared as the MCU's Spider-man in Captain America: Civil War in 2016.

Spider-Man: Homecoming currently has an 86.44 ComicBook.com Composite Score, making it the fourth-highest rated comic book movie of all time on.

Spider-Man: Homecoming also has a 4.21 out of 5 ComicBook.com User Rating, making it the fourth-highest rated comic book movie of all time among ComicBook.com users.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is still playing in some theaters. The film becomes available to own or rent on Digital HD on September 26th and on Blue-ray and DVD on October 17th.

Spider-Man will return in Avengers: Infinity War, opening in theaters in May 2018.
