They don't need a a tournament final to make Cody/Archer matter. It still has heat outside of the tournament because Archer is going to beat the shyt out of Dustin and he's been calling Cody out the whole time.
You could've helped make Darby look formidable by having him catch Cody and put up a fight before losing to Archer (which puts LOTS of heat on Lance since people would be rooting for Cinderella) and THEN having Archer call Cody out verbally.
