Jaime Munguia (31-0, 26 KOs) will headline the first Golden Boy Promotions event on DAZN in 2019 as he defends his WBO Junior Middleweight World Title against Japanese contender Takeshi Inoue (13-0-1, 7 KOs) in a 12-round battle. The action will take place on Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas and will be streamed live on DAZN – which is just $9.99 per month after a one-month free trial.

“Our new partnership with DAZN is groundbreaking in this new era of boxing and sports streaming; fans subscribed to DAZN will constantly get high-level action at a single affordable price,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “Jaime Munguia’s stock rose as he headlined three of our cards last year, and he will only become an even bigger star because he is planning for a very busy 2019 on DAZN. This event will also showcase some of our best talent as we continue to build the next generation of main event fighters.”

Munguia is a 22-year-old champion of Tijuana, Mexico who catapulted to the highest levels of the 154-pound division by knocking out Sadam “World Kid” Ali in May to capture the WBO Junior Middleweight World Title. Munguia then defeated Liam “Beefy” Smith via 12-round unanimous decision in July and completed a spectacular year with a third-round knockout win over Brandon “Bad Boy” Cook in the co-main event of Canelo vs. GGG 2. Munguia will embark on yet another busy year by defending his title for a third time in January.

“I’m thankful and happy with how my career went in 2018, but I’m hungrier and more excited than ever,” said Jaime Munguia. “I want to prove myself against the best. Takeshi Inoue is a warrior. Japanese fighters leave everything in the ring, and Inoue is no exception. His style will complement mine and will make for a great fight. I will put on a show for all my fans and thank you again for all your support.”

Inoue is a 29-year-old native of Japan who will make his debut in the United States in only his second fight outside of his native country. Inoue is ranked No. 3 by the WBO and is coming off a unanimous decision win against former regional titleholder Yuki Nonaka.

“I am pleased to be able to challenge for a world title. It is a dream come true,” said Takeshi Inoue. “I have experience fighting abroad, and I am excited and confident that I will win this fight. Munguia is a powerful fighter with heavy hands, endurance and technique. To prepare for a fighter like this, I have trained hard and in depth on technique and endurance. I have sparred long, hard rounds, so that I will be able to win even if it goes to a decision. I am highly motivated and mentally focused. Boxing fans can expect a great fight.”

“This Jan. 26, Jaime Munguia will once again put on a display of skill and power against Japanese warrior Takeshi Inoue in a fight between undefeated boxers,” said Fernando Beltran, CEO of Zanfer Promotions. “To have a fighter of the caliber of Jaime Munguia is a breath of fresh air for the world of boxing. He is ready to be recognized as the best super welterweight in the world and to defeat anyone in his path to achieve this. It is an honor for Zanfer to have a strategic alliance with Golden Boy Promotions to continue to build Jaime’s career. It will be an unforgettable one, and I invite everyone to watch him on DAZN.”

In the co-main event, Jesus Rojas (26-2-2, 19 KOs) of Caguas, Puerto Rico will defend his WBA Featherweight World Championship against Chinese contender Xu Can (10-0, 1 KO) in a 12-round clash.

Undercard
The undercard for this event will feature several fighters from the Golden Boy Promotions stable, including three fighters who call Texas their home. They say everything is bigger in Texas, so we are making sure this undercard is huge as well.

Joshua “The Professor” Franco (14-1-1, 7 KOs) of San Antonio, Texas will seek to avenge his only loss against Argentine puncher Lucas Fernandez (12-2-1, 9 KOs) in a 10-round fight for the vacant NABF Bantamweight Title.

Alberto “Impacto” Melian (3-0, 2 KOs), a former amateur standout who participated in the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games, will make his United States debut after signing with Golden Boy Promotions. In only his third fight, Melian will compete for the vacant NABA Super Bantamweight Title in a 10-round battle against Edgar Ortega (10-1-2, 5 KOs) of Mexicali, Mexico.

Filipino contender Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta (32-2-2, 17 KOs) will defend his NABO Lightweight Title in a 10-round fight against a soon-to-be-announced opponent.

Alex Rincon (5-0, 5 KOs) of Dallas, Texas will return in a six-round super welterweight fight against Jeremy Ramos (10-5, 4 KOs) of Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

George Rincon (5-0, 2 KOs), the older brother of Alex who also hails from Dallas, Texas, will participate in a six-round super lightweight clash against Eduardo Reyes (9-15, 6 KOs) of Reynosa, Mexico.

James “The Beast” Wilson (7-0, 6 KOs) of Los Angeles, a quick-handed heavyweight prospect who has also fought as a mixed martial artist and a kickboxer, will compete against a soon-to-be announced opponent in his first six-round fight as an official member of the Golden Boy Promotions stable.

rojas vs this chinese cat with 1 knockout in 10 fights and its a title fight..well lets see what GB can do on DAZN
Rojas is only still a "regular" champ cause WBA rules. Joseph Diaz just beat him but weighed in half pounds over 126 so he couldn't have won the title but also according to their rules Rojas can't lose it in this instance.

Vergil Ortiz Jr. Medically Cleared To Fight This Weekend in Texas

By Jake Donovan

Assuming he makes weight on Friday, the show will finally go on for Vergil Ortiz, Jr.

The unbeaten knockout artist from Texas has cleared one major hurdle that prevented him from fighting just six weeks ago—passing all of his pre-fight medicals ahead of his clash with Jesus Valdez (23-4-1, 12KOs) this Saturday at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

It will mark the DAZN debut for Ortiz (11-0, 11KOs) who was supposed to enjoy that distinction last December at New York City’s famed Madison Square Garden, on the undercard of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s knockout win over Rocky Fielding.

Instead, a medical issue surrounding his having received Lasik eye surgery two months prior prompted the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) to deny him a license—leaving him without a fight and also a federal ID suspension. As much wasn’t at all lost on him during fight week ahead of Saturday’s show.

“Hopefully, I really get to fight this time,” Ortiz quipped on Thursday during the final pre-fight press conference for Saturday’s show. His bout with Valdez comes in supporting capacity to Jaime Munguia’s third defense of his super welterweight title versus Japan’s Takeshi Inoue.

There’s still Friday’s weigh-in to get past, but—unlike his situation six weeks ago—Ortiz now has the opportunity to at least get to the scales.

“He passed his medicals; he’s good to go,” Greg Alvarez, head of Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) Combat Sports confirmed to BoxingScene.com. “When his name first came up to appear on this show, we couldn’t approve him or even review his record until his suspension was cleared by (NYSAC).

“Once that happened, we were able to approve—although of course he still had to meet and pass all of our qualifications to get a license in Texas.”

The bout will mark Ortiz’s third in his home state of Texas, the previous two occasions coming just outside of his Dallas hometown in 2016 and 2017, respectively. The rising prospect—who turns just 21 in March—has been a fixture on Canelo undercards since turning pro in 2016, having appeared on four cards in a row featuring the World middleweight champion until he was forced off of the December show in New York City.

His last ring appearance came in September, scoring a 2nd round knockout of Roberto Ortiz on the undercard of Alvarez’s win over Gennady Golovkin in their middleweight championship rematch. The 133 days between fights marks the longest “inactive” period of his young career, but figures to be kept busy with Golden Boy Promotions planning a big 2019 for its rising super lightweight.

“I have to say (Ortiz) is the top prospect, or at least one of the top prospects we have here at Golden Boy Promotions,” insists Oscar de la Hoya, Ortiz’s promoter. “He will most likely fight for a workd title (soon) if he continues on his path.

“We will be looking to keep him on this path, putting him in tough and hopefully get him to that world title by the end of the year.”

DAZN Weights From Houston: Munguia 153.2, Inoue 153.6

By Jake Donovan

Jaime Munguia is officially ready to follow up his breakout 2018 ring campaign with an even bigger year in the 12 months ahead.

The unbeaten super welterweight titlist from Mexico and his challenger, Japan’s Takeshi Inoue both made weight for their title fight, which takes place Saturday evening live on DAZN USA from Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

Munguia (31-0, 26KOs) checked in at a slender 153.2 pounds, while Inoue (13-0-1, 7KOs) came in at a ripped 153.6 pounds.

Saturday’s headliner will mark the third defense of the super welterweight title for Munguia, who claimed the belt just eight months ago in a brutal 4th round knockout of Brooklyn’s Sadam Ali. His previous two defenses came within the first four months of his title win, turning away the challenges of Liam Smith and Brandon Cook in remaining an unbeaten titlist.

Admittedly, he's flying in blind heading into this weekend's main event.

There isn’t a lot we know about him, there’s not really a lot of film on his career," Munguia told DAZN's Ak and Barak following the weigh-in. "We’re just going to rely on experience to get the job done. I;’m doing it for all of my Mexican fans."

Inoue (13-0-1, 7KOs) enters his first career title fight, along with making his stateside debut. The 29-year old contender has fought exclusively in Japan throughout his 4 ½ year career, most recently in a 12-round decision win over countryman Yuki Nonaka last April.

In the co-feature, Jesus Rojas will make the first defense of his secondary featherweight title versus China’s Xu Can.

Both fighters made weight, although the defending champ had to strip down to his birthday suit to hit the 126-pound limit on the dot. China’s Can (15-2, 2KOs weighed 125.6 pounds for his first career title fight.

Puerto Rico’s Rojas (26-2-2, 19KOs) will make the first official defense of his secondary featherweight title which he claimed in a Sept. ’17 knockout of Claudio Marrero. Just one fight has followed since that career-best moment, having to settle for a non-title fight—and a loss—in falling short versus Joseph Diaz.

Their clash last August was played with house money, due to Diaz coming in over the limit and thus leaving Rojas as reigning titlist despite losing a 12-round decision.

Vergil Ortiz (11-0, 11KOs) breathed a sigh of relief after making weight for his scheduled 10-round battle with Mexico’s Jesus Valdez. Not that he was worried about hitting the 144-pound contracted limit; more so that he made it further along than was the case the last time he was scheduled to fight.

The unbeaten knockout artist from Dallas tipped the scales at 143.2 pounds for Saturday’s preliminary battle with Valdez, who weighed in at 142 pounds. Ortiz wasn’t even given a chance to step on the scales in a scheduled December bout at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, as he was denied a license due to having Lasik surgery two months prior which spooked the New York Stat Athletic Commission.
