This is true. I work in the gulf region, chillin in Dubai this weekend, and most of the hype here from international folks was for some rugby championship between South Africa and New Zealand.

Ultimately nobody is going to Riyadh (or Jeddah) as a tourist destination until (1) the alcohol ban is lifted and (2) there’s a complete 180 with the women’s rights issues.

As it is: No pubs, bars, clubs, lounges or brunches… many gyms/amenities segregated by gender… and women don’t feel comfortable being there? Shiiiiiiid.

That’s what they need to double-down on fixing if they really want to be a tourist destination. Overpaying celebs for one-off events doesn’t address the root cause issues.
