10 dead in Ghana floods

Accra - At least 10 people including eight children have died in a torrential downpour in Ghana, the west African nation's national disaster agency said on Tuesday.

Four days of rain last week swamped the capital, Accra, and much of the central region.

The downpour came a year after over 150 people were killed in Accra following an explosion at a petrol station where people were seeking shelter during heavy rains.

"In all we have 10 to 12 who lost their lives during this rainy season," National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) regional coordinator Sandy Amartey told AFP.

"We have two women and an eight-year-old girl who were walking and a wall fell on them and they died," Amartey said.

"There is also a report of a nine-year-old boy who was electrocuted at Amamoma" to the west of Accra, he added.

Another six children also drowned, Amartey said.

Residents were angry that the flooding was causing deaths after the government promised last year to prevent similar tragedies.

"Every day they say they will solve this (flood) problem. But nothing changes. See all my properties have been destroyed," said Nii Nai, a resident of Adabraka, an Accra suburb.

NADMO has asked residents to stay away from rivers and low lying areas until the rain subsides.

"We are asking people to move away from the low lying areas," NADMO spokesperson Kweku De-Graft said. "We ask them to move away to get the drains cleared so we are doing our part."

Ghana's rainy season begins in June and lasts until August with poor sewage infrastructure resulting in frequent flooding.

$765m meant to tackle Accra floods can’t be traced – MP

$765m meant to tackle Accra floods can’t be traced – MP

The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North Constituency, Joe Appiah, has disclosed that a colossal amount of money to the tune of $765 million loan secured for addressing the perennial flooding in the country cannot be traced.

The MP, who is also a ranking member of the Committee on Works and Housing, revealed on Atinka FM’s morning show AM Drive after the Committee on Works and Housing met with the Hydrology Department Authority.

According to him, the money was earmarked for projects including building bridges, effective drainage systems, covers and storm drains.

The President after the Circle disaster on June 3, 2016, promised he was going to tackle the flood menace. However, the money cannot be accounted for.

The recent flood that hit some parts of Accra did not spare his constituents, particularly residents of Sakama, Dansoman and Awoshie.

The MP also raised concerns about the affordability of the 5000 houses located at Kpone, saying Ghanaians cannot pay for such houses.

It's fukked up. One of my long term goals if i become rich or powerful enough is to go to Ghana and help build infrastructure and all that shyt. But some of the stories my dad (whos an engineer and experienced first hand) and others have told me ...I dont know if it's realistic at this point.
Could you elaborate?
