I wasn't all that surprised about Kovalev's game plan and how he fought. He took a similar approach against Yarde and on the Alvarez rematch too. Basically, that's what their tactic was with McGirt in all 3 of their fights so far.
Use the jab a lot, be active but don't commit to all punches. McGirt knew Kovalev's main problem is his durability and stamina so he went with a tactic that minimalized exchanges and relied more on jabs and activity than big shots. Kovalev has a world-class jab and good fundamentals back from his amateur days so he could even make it work against good opponents like Alvarez or Yarde but it proved to be too few against Canelo.
