I remember when Avery Brooks was Solomon Nothup back in the day, in that TV movie Half Slave - Half Free. Dope movie in retrospect. That being said this movie is being done by a Black director and I will check for it. Great book by the way.

From the director of Shame? Shee-it, this is a bonafide Oscar contender.

Black directors finally getting some great movies made. Coogler has Fruitvale Station, Spike got Oldboy, Lee Daniels got the Butler, and McQueen's got this.

Finally? black directors do make good movies there is just not enough of them getting funded by studios/producers.And have you seen any of these movies? if not how do u know they are good?

Until then, on all these black servitude movies no matter who the "amazing cast" is.

Northup wasn't just a slave tho. He was a violinist amongst other things before he got kidnapped.

i am not taking anything away from Northup or from the story

it's Hollywood man. They pull this sh-t seemingly annually now with these movies/parts where they got folks harkening back to the 'good ol days' of slavery and segregation.

very little diversity in the roles that are offered and the stories that are told.

I hope the film is different to the trailer. Looks a little too Oscar baity, especially if you compare if to the brutality of something like Hunger.

But the cast is crazy.

McQueen and Ejiofor need to get that Fela biopic on deck next
