I kinda disagree on the lottery one.
Yes you have a very small chance of winning the jackpot but you can still win a more than what you spent.

Last year, I spent $2 on a scratch off and won $50

I mean I'm not going by total life wins, I'm just going by what I spent on that certain check.
If last check I spent $20 and won $5. Yeah that's a $15 loss. This check spent $10 and and won $12, yeah I'm still down from last time but this time I got $2 more than what I spent.
