Claude Brown demonstrated this in Manchild in the Promised Land.Harlem in the 50s was worst than any hood right now
Its crazy when you think about. It just proves the actual environment comes first, not no damn music or that other bullshyt.Claude Brown demonstrated this in Manchild in the Promised Land.
It's a wonder that ANY minority boys and men escaped alive. Social programs were lacking; drug use was on the rise; Civil Rights were few; new black folk arrived in Harlem from the south DAILY; birth control was rudimentary/illegal; and undervalued minority kids got lost in the urban shuffle.
But...gun fights were less frequent. Fists and knives were still relied upon by hoodlums. Hip hop/rap culture hadn't happened yet. White oppression mandated more black unity then than now. Perhaps the clouds had silver lining even in those bad old days?
Back then, cops weren't NEARLY as concerned about enforcing the law in...certain neighborhoods as they are/aren't now. Convictions were iffy, even when EVERYbody knew who done it....
In 2011, Englewood was the most dangerous neighborhood in the USA, slightly edging watts in LA.
Englewood had over 30 murders, enough to put it at number 1. But that pales in comparrison to 50s harlem which had 100 murders damn near every year.

Back then, cops weren't NEARLY as concerned about enforcing the law in...certain neighborhoods as they are/aren't now. Convictions were iffy, even when EVERYbody knew who done it.
Or so I have read.![]()
