I'm gonna take off the nostalgia glasses here and tell you that this was the start of the downfall of true R&B as it became more urbanized thoughout the 90s.

you could have used a different terminology
but yeah the more hip-hop/rap influence the lower the quality of songwriting and vocals has gotten
now we are basically in a lane of melodic rap with shallow sloppy songwriting
