2 dead, 18 injured in South Side shootings
Two men were killed and at least 18 people have been wounded in shootings since Thursday evening across the city’s South Side, police said.
Nine people were shot in the Englewood neighborhood, and the two fatal shootings happened within a mile of each other in the Chatham neighborhood.
A 23-year-old man was shot to death and a 20-year-old was hurt during a shooting around 9:55 p.m. in the Chatham neighborhood, police said.
The two men were inside a basement apartment of a three-story building in the 7900 block of South State Street when someone knocked on the door, police said.
An attacker asked for the 20-year-old man, fired multiple gunshots and fled northbound of the scene, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer.

The 23-year-old was struck several times in the body, and the 20-year-old was hit in the leg and shoulder and grazed in the head. Both were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Greer said.
The 23-year-old was later pronounced dead at the hospital, and the other man’s condition stabilized, Greer said.
Another fatal shooting happened at 3:10 p.m. near the intersection of 79th Street and Langley Avenue in the Chatham neighborhood, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
A 30-year-old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition. He was pronounced dead at 3:46 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. His name was not available pending notification of his family.
Along with that man, a 22-year-old man was shot in the side and was in critical condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center, according to police and fire officials. A 38-year-old man was shot in the right arm and right foot and was taken to Stroger, where his condition had stabilized, according to police and fire officials.
According to police, the three men were in the 7900 block of South Langley when two men exited a maroon van and began firing, police said. After the shooting, the two men fled in the van, police said.
Several uniformed and plainclothes officers and detectives walked within the yellow and red crime scene tape. Two detectives began approaching doorsteps along Langley -- a block lined with two- and three-flat apartment buildings -- as a few onlookers stood nearby.
Traffic along 79th -- a busy thoroughfare during rush hour -- was halted. Cars trying to make it to 79th had to turn through alleys.
One man walked through an alley past the crime scene tape, an earbud in his ear. "You just don't care around here," he said.
"Wow," another passerby said to a reporter. "You don't hear that. You don't see that on the North Side.
"What is this? What is the world coming to?" she said.

Tracy Davis, of the South Shore neighborhood, had just gotten off the bus about a block away, and as he was walking down the street he said he heard about 13 shots.
"I hear shots, and I run for cover ... right there in that gangway," Davis said. "I see one guy (in his 20s) had got shot and fell right there, right in front of that barbershop.
"I told him 'Don't move,' because when you get shot those bullets will travel to in you," he said.
Several more streams of police tape blocked the entire intersection. An occupied No. 79 bus was detoured.
Just south of the intersection were about a dozen yellow evidence markers in the street and on a stretch of the sidewalk, stained with several dabs of blood.
An officer laid down on his stomach to look under an undamaged silver Nissan for more shell casings.
